This was an insane hit. The video coming out reminds me of Andrew, but with more water. We have years of cleanup and rebuilding ahead.

My understanding is that first, the new vegetative growth that emerges in late summer early fall will be sufficiently hardened off to protect against early cold nights and desiccating winds (we had one as early as December last year, although rare). And second, once hardened, subsequent and sustained cold snaps will encourage terminal ends to produce more flowering panicles from strong healthy growth that can support more fruit weight.

I also like to heavily prune the inside of the canopy as we enter this really wet season in August-October to improve airflow and minimize fungus issues.

Rule of thumb: always do your pruning as quickly after fruit harvest as in the summer as possible unless you are a very early season variety). You don't say where you are located, but even in South Florida I would not do any pruning in October. If you are further north, with a shorter growing season, I would stop pruning by September 1st.

Hey, Joe. Wanted to let you know that 2 of my three seeds (d. stenantha) have germinated well, I'm waiting on one slow poke.

Also, a minor detail, but it may affect folks looking for your product: you have the spelling as "stenatha" in several places on your website and Etsy. However, I THINK the spelling is "stenantha" (with a second "n"). I could be wrong but you may want to verify it.

Abiu and Imbe season are generally over for local S. Florida . But Skhan is right - if money is not really an issue Miami fruit gets them from somewhere (although blackberry fruit might be a harder source)

I think I meant flower drop.  I think you are right, that the rainfall caused the flower drop; I think it rained around the time the flowers opened.  I haven't had much issues with fruit drop, but it seems bugs can get into the fruit during the summer.

I may just go ahead and take one VW out and replace it with the SD and Neon cuttings.  Neon is very similar to SD.

Do you have issues with your DF yellowing in the summer?  I have mine planted in the ground, which I know probably keeps a bit more moisture than what is ideal.

My Halley's Comet is in full sun does get a bit yellow and sunburns. But my Sugar Dragon and Dark star grow on the same trellis and don't get it. So I have always chalked that up to varieties handling sun exposure differently. My VW is not in full sun all day, so I can't really compare them.

That said, give these guys all the water they can take in summer. They can take a surprising amount of water.

So I am near you and have a LZ tree that is probably 7-8 years old in full sun. I don't really baby any of my trees with much of anything other than a good pruning regimen (keep the top of the canopy open for air flow to minimize disease). Early fruit are usually clean, as the season goes on they do get hit with the dark anthracnose streaks, but not in a harmful way - just cosmetic.

Tree is vigorous and the fruit is top tier in taste and it is my top producer. In my limited experience, I have encountered no jelly seed and no anthracnose that got bad enough to need me to cut away parts of the fruit.

So I say go for it, especially if you can offer it full sun and keep it away from our canal water around here which I am sure contributes to more pathogen exposure. My trees closer to the canal seem to be perpetually hit by fungal issues, squirrels, and my incredulous looks of disappointment.

Fruit drop or flower drop? I have never seen fruit drop with VW and I am in your neck of the woods. What I have seen, on many varieties including VW, is flower drop after failure to pollinate. Typically this for me happens if we get any rain during the 12 hour bloom window.

That said, sugar dragon is bullet proof. No problems is full sun, handles drought quite well, tasty productive fruit, albeit quite small. No experience with neon.
