First Canistel fruit, maybe a favorite

Ate my first canistel I've grown in California, and I think it is one of my favorite fruits, I haven't had one in many years, and this was one was pretty dang good. I have two grafted and one large seedling that is starting to flower. Hoping for a long humid summer.

What cultivar is it? Ong believes only Bruce fruits in California. I know Exotica has two Bruce that barely seem to fruit, and Encanto Farms has a seedling that sets a lot of fruit which resemble Bruce in appearance. But your fruit looks more slender.

Do you grow Ross Sapote as well? Have you had fruit from it?

Best when creamy??  It needs to be let ripened till pure creamy texture or it will have poor taste and texture. It should be soft to the point that one who doesnt k ow a canistel would throw it away.  Basically same instructions as with a Black Sapote.

Yes, the one I picked was soft on the tree, and had no seeds. I believe I have one "Bruce", one I got from Adam a few years ago in Orlando, and then the seedling. I ma right on the coast and don't get much heat, but they seem to taking on some life finally.

I pruned after harvesting maybe April or May, cant remember. I striipped the leafs as a result I have over 100 fruits hanging on a 5' 3 year old tree

You mean you cut off the tip of every branch? Does that encourage more branches for denser fruit production?

I live right next to the coast in Orange County.  My ross sapote tree is fruiting really well with about 20+ fruits on the tree, first time fruiting--looking forward to trying them.  I was wondering about the pruning time too, but I assume the same info for canistel applies to the ross sapote.
