Red Custard Apple - Annona Reticulata - Ants on flowers?
« on: June 29, 2022, 05:04:09 PM »
There are ants on my red custard apple flowers and all the flowers are not setting fruit yet.  The tree is not at full size, it's about 1-2 yrs old, this is the first time it's flowering.  Are the ants causing any issues?

Id check for scale or mealy bugs because the ants could be farming them. Ants generally don't seem to be an issue on my annonas. They mainly target my abiu.

Definitely would check for scale. Ants are farming all over our guanabana tree and fruits. Hosing em daily, made a game out of it.

Are there any pollinators in your yard?
If you are not hand pollinating, you would want to have some insect do the pollination for you.

Ants are all over mine to but they seem to help with fruit set so I don't mind much.
Haven't seen them farming anything yet though.

I use tanglefoot if i see scale, it works well but it takes a while for things to resolve.

It doesn't seem to have scale, just ants on the flowers.  There are pollinators for mango/avocado in my yard but I've never had other annonas.  Is hand pollination recommended for red custard apple?

Where did you get the tree from? I'm in the area and looking for one.
