Help, please — Atemoya 'Gefner' fruit ripening time . . .
« on: October 24, 2022, 02:40:22 PM »
Gentle TFF Members,

I have one fruit hanging on my 'Gefner' right now in late October.  It had two fruits eariler this season but, sadly, my neighbor broke one off while asking me about it.

The remaining one is approximately 3-inches+ in diameter and I am wondering when it should be ripe.

What is the best way to tell?  I'm unsure what to look for to be able to know since this is the first time this tree has set any fruit.  It's in a 5-gallon pot; does that make any difference?

Any/all suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA

Paul M.

The fruit will lighten up and you will see yellow between the sections
The fruit also softens up but it can seem rock hard in the morning and
be soft the same night
Most of my annona tree's early fruit don't size up and are not the best tasting.
The second year the fruit should improve.

Okay, good...Thanks for the reply  That's like what my sugar apple does when it's fruit is about ready to pick.

Interesting.  Sounds like it is important to watch for the yellowing between the fruit sections (carpels).

Form what you say here, this early fruit on my 'Gefner' will stay somewhat small and retain a spiky exterior.

And I guess I should have asked originally what sort of schedule 'Gefner' has for blooming, setting fruit, and ripening (in what month, usually)?

Again TIA,

Paul M.

As I recall our Gefner blooms mostly in March/April and most of the fruit comes ripe in September/October.

Thanks, Galatians.  I guess that I'd better start keeping an closer eye on it.

I am curious too.  My Geffner has its first significant crop.  Last year it made two tiny fruits that fell off early so I don't really count that.  Not sure when to pick them, they don't have far to fall so waiting until they drop is a possibility.  Not sure what typical fruit size is for these, I assumed the current ones I have are still undersized

Mine did pretty much the same last year, Brian.

The one surviving fruit on my 'Gefner' looks to be about the same size as yours in the photo that you posted above, and appears about as spiky, too.

Don't know if mine will get any/much larger before it ripens –if it ripens at all. Some of my tree's leaves are beginnng to yellow and some have dropped but the fruit still looks okay.  I'm guessing the leaf-fall is due to the week of cool overnight temps that we had here in west central Florida about ten days ago.

Fingers X-ed!

first one of mine dropped, so I guess they are ripe.

I suspect this crop is undersized as the ones I've seen in pictures looked bigger.  It tasted good but was pretty seedy, hoping next year's crop is larger fruit and higher flesh ratio.

Yah, based on the seed count that should have been a way bigger fruit. Maybe the tree was small or was holding too many fruits. Flavor is not typically as good on seedy fruits like that.

Here's my Geffner from a few years ago.  Top 2 is Geffner, bottom left Lisa, and bottom right is AP.

Geffner, could get to a 3 lb fruit. But if I overpollinate with too many fruits they tend to be seedy and smaller.  It's my favorite atemoya in regards to taste and texture.  I think it's unique depending what stage you pick them they tend to vastly tastes different. I pick them when they are ripe but rock hard and let it ripen. I think they are sweeter then and has a texture reminiscent of a firm variety sugar apple.  If you let it just get slightly soft on the tree or drop, I think it's a less sweet and the texture become reminiscent of a cherimoya, very soft and custardly.  The variety AP for example seems to be more consistent whether picked rocked hard or a drop/soften on the tree.  I grow in southern california.

Thanks for sharing.  I was thinking mine tasted much like cherimoya, interesting that picking them a bit earlier could result in *sweeter* fruit.

I was hand pollinating my Geffner because I was looking forward to getting some fruit, as my cherimoya never sets fruit.  Now that the Geffner looks like an easy producer I will stop and let it self-pollinate

I have a new crop on my container Geffner this year.  The fruits are bigger than last crop but still not nearly as large as I have seen they can reach.  I saw one dropped off on its own so I picked the next ripest one also to try counter-ripening as was suggested.  The one that fell had a decent flesh ratio and less than 20 seeds, but I think it was a bit overripe as it had a very slight fermented taste.  I was expecting they would get more yellow before falling off.  I'll see how the counter-ripe one does.  The tree is still very happy in its 20gal container.

The one I picked hard and let soften on the counter was much better, thans for the suggestion Eggo.  This one also was low seeded, it was really nice.  This tree is definitely a keeper
