Book recommendations?
« on: November 25, 2022, 01:28:06 PM »
I need a new fruit/grower book! If you have a book you love, or find yourself returning to over the years, please let me know. Thanks!
A couple that I’ve appreciated:
The Holistic Orchard by Michael Phillips
Fig Trees of the Balearic Islands by Montserrat Pons

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Tending the Wild by M. Kat Anderson
Water in Plain Sight by Judith Schwartz
Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond by Brad Lancaster
The Perfect Fruit by Chip Brantley (story of Floyd Zaiger, Dave Wilson, and some of the largest growers in California)
The Resilient Gardener by Carol Deppe
Frutas no Brasil

I have many wild foraging books as well, top four are:
The New Wildcrafted Cuisine by Pascal Bauder (foraging/cookbook)
Incredible Wild Edibles by Samuel Thayer
Around the World in 80 Plants by Stephen Barstow (Somehow another author published a different book under same title)
-Stephen Barstow has a website called Edimentals
https://www.edimentals.com/blog/
Edible Wild Plants by John Kallas

Ben mango, thanks for the recommendation.

The internet archive open library has the book.  You can "borrow" for an hour at a time, if anyone wants to preview it or read it online.

The Ideal soil 2.0, can be found free online. Or You can try and find Carey Reams and W Albrecht's lectures.
A go to soil source, straight forward easy advice. Helps create independence from agronomists.

One straw revolution, M. Fukuoka
Back to nature, M. Fukuoka
I've saved lot's of money by following some of Fukuoka's advice.

A Botany book that is used in university. They are expensive but will knock any garden book to the ditch since it got proper science so you know your getting the basics right, Like how soil is formed, photosyn, hydrolysis, phyllotaxis. This will help you save a lot of money since you will be able to avoid snake oil products or bad advice from others.

The Bible have some good sections but you got to know where to look.

I did read Bill whitmans book, 40 years with tropical fruit.
A lot of the book is full of rare fruit council meeting minutes and letters and such, so Isn't really a book IMO, more like a collection of articles. I think those articles can be found online for free too in a rare fruit archive.

Peace
