Guava losing leaves
« on: December 27, 2022, 11:31:21 PM »
I have 5 guava trees, of which two guava trees losing their leaves completely. Any ideas as to what causes Guava to lose leaves? I'm looking for a list to help diagnose the issues. I live in Southern California. Appreciate any help from the experts here.

Too cold or drought.
Probably the latter.
I’m watering in ground tree once a week.
Every 2-3 days for trees in pot.
Tall guava branches loss some leaves from dry wind.

Your trees are in pots?

Could be the cold.  My malaysian guava dropped a few older leaves towards the bottom. Cas guava same thing (but I believe it is more cold sensitive) and already bouncing back with new growth.  But losing all leaves sounds a little more serious.  Guava trees are resilient so you should be fine once you figure out the issue.

Thanks. They are in the ground. How much water do you give per week?

Mine are both in pots.  Since end of fall I have been giving water about once a week for Malaysian, and probably a little more frequently for Cas.

I see similar leaf drop on some of my guavas. The ones in pot seems to drop leaves more than the ones in the ground. I'm near you so we have similar climate. The ones that do not drop leaves are also my oldest trees (over 10 yrs).

My in ground guavas are still holding all their leaves, very impressive for these temperatures (9b) with some frost. The potted ones always lost their leaves. With all the rain we're getting I don't think it's drought, I think it's cold. I haven't had to water for weeks, but I have also had 13.38" of rain in 1 month.

Thanks folks! I guess it could be the cold. I will observe to see if I start seeing leaf buds coming in the next few months.

A few gallons when you have a few days of low humidity.
With plenty of rain and no leaves, your guava trees should be ok.

I dumped 100 gallons of rain water on my in ground trees.
I’ll dump more from rain this weekend.
All guava trees here still have leaves.
Not a single leaf dropped since rain.
