How late in the year can 'Mexicola Grande' be pruned . . . .
« on: August 01, 2023, 04:25:53 AM »
My 'Mexicola Grande' has been in the ground now for five years and seems healthy and is pushing 20' tall now.

Last spring (of '22) I pruned the top out of it to keep it smaller for easier picking, shortenng it to about 8' to10' tall.  But it has already jumped back up and needs to be pruned and shaped again.

So how late –it's the start of August at this writing– can I prune this avocado without interrupting the bloom cycle for next season ('24)?  I want to bring it back down to 8' to 10' again for easier picking.

Suggestions welcomed . . .

Cheers!

Did you get a crop this year?
Usually people prune after the last fruits are picked

The tree produced a big flush of flowers early this spring but set no fruit.  (Previous years it made lots of fruit but some vermin ate 'em all before they ever got anywhere close to ripe.)

Neither any flowers nor fruit-set this year.  Thus, how might that factor into pruning the tree –and how late can that pruning be done so as to minimize affecting next season's flowering and fruit-set?

I want the tree to focus it's energy on fruit but once the tree is done
fruiting then I would want to prune the tree and give the tree time to push new growth
and harden before the next season. I wouldn't want the tree's energy going to
push new growth in the Spring I want the tree to use it's energy to flower and set fruit.
I wish my trees were growing as fast as yours. I have a Mexicloa Grande that is over 5 years old
and it is around 10' and hasn't been topped since it was 6'. I would have pruned the tree in June
if it didn't have fruit this year but I would do it ASAP now. In a normal fruiting year it would be finishing up
it's fruiting around now

Thanx for that advice, A–D...

Your explanation for when to prune 'Mexicola Grande' makes very good sense,

Looks like I should get onto pruning mine right away.

Then likely after pruning it would benefit from being hit with some fertilizer.

Cheers!

it is around 10' and hasn't been topped since it was 6'.

My 'Mexicola Grande' was in the ground for three years before it got topped, middle of last year.  Cut it back to about 8ft from about twice that tall.  Apparently it had enough strength to bounce back quickly so that a year later it needs topping again.

Possibly it grew very quickly due to the fact that although it bloomed this year ('23) it set no fruit so its energy looks to have all gone into re-growth.

That’s usually what happens to fruit trees when they have a year with poor fruit set.
