Can a Pickering of this size produce?
« on: September 21, 2023, 01:00:24 PM »
Can a Pickering mango tree of this size produce mangos next season (provided no winter damage etc)? The tree is about 5 feet tall and maybe 6 feet at the widest. This seems small to me, but I’ve read that Pickering is very precocious and it’s obviously dwarfish by nature.

If yes, how many mangos would you expect a tree of this size to safely hold?

Would love for my children to be able to try one next year.

Yes, it will.  They bear fruit a lot smaller than that

I say yes, too.  One thing you should know about Pickering is that it can set hundreds of fruit, but 90% of them will fall off, still leaving you with plenty of fruit.  Whatever your tree holds until maturity next season will be the proper number for a tree of that size.  I'd say you might get a dozen.  Exciting, isn't it?

This is my Pickering. It held probably 60+ this past year

I really enjoyed a florigon and pickering every night after dinner. Good contrast of flavors

It should be able to hold at least 20-30 fruit next year. You have a nice canopy but the trunk looks a little on the thin side compared to the canopy.

One other question - I’ve noticed that the leaves on my Pickering are a much lighter green (almost lime green) compared to the leaves of most of my other mango trees. Is this normal or does it indicate an issue?

I planted it in ground from a pot about a month or two ago. It did put on a few healthy looking growth flushes while in the pot…

My Pickering tree always had very dark green leaves.

I agree with the others, it may set 100's of fruit and should hold 20-30.  I am so glad I selected pickering as our mango tree.  It is a fantastic producer and the fruit taste great.  Our previous tree was a carrie- also great taste but nowhere near the production habit, and in peak season you'd almost be drinking the fruit vs. eating it (good for jams, drinks, etc. though)
