I finally fruited Lychee in TN!
« on: July 16, 2024, 02:58:46 PM »

Well after some time, I finally got my lychee to fruit!
This is sweetheart variety.
Pretty good first crop. Got around 50+ fruits so I'm thankful.
Tree is in ground. In a pot, I would have gotten a fraction of the fruit.
Brix lvls are up there too at 21.5%.
I also got several giant fruits so that's really cool.
I am going to plant another lychee tree in my greenhouse to make the total to 3 plants.
This has to be my favorite fruit or at least top 3.

Wow congratz! My sweetheart died when planting outdoor. Im going to give it another try, but will add wind protection and no fertilizer to see if it will have more success.

Awesome!

I planted my two container lychees in the ground in my greenhouse as a hail mary as they were on the decline.  Hoping to better results in ground.  Glad you proved it is possible

Thanks for the kind words!
If the seeds look like mine, they won't sprout. Varieties that make aborted seeds like sweetheart can't produce viable seeds.

Great job Jabo! Just picking the last of the season lychees here in Florida. You are almost 2 months behind there in TN.

Great accomplishment Jabo!

Picking your own Lychee is a dream-

apparently in China there are rumors that the fruit is actually addictive, which I think might be true

Once you try the best tree ripe varieties (Guiwei, No Mai Tze…), it will easily become your favorite fruit  :)

Thank you! I’m always inspired though by your jackfruit and garcinias! That has to be one of the best zone pushes ever

That's awesome! How many years has it been in the ground? How large is the tree? Do you protect it in the winter?
Thanks,

How cold does the soil get in winter in your greenhouse?  I had always assumed an insulated foundation would be a requirement for northern growers.  I know you are quite a bit south from me but doesn't the ground freeze?  That is impressive to see lychee thriving, I'm really happy for you

Thanks everyone!

NewGen, it’s been in ground for about 4? Had the tree for maybe 6-7.
Had a big flower 2 years ago but I pruned them all off for structural issues although it could’ve easily held. Then the next year it didn’t flower. But this year was it. It’s in ground in my greenhouse so it doesn’t get below 38 or so.

Brian, no insulation…surprisingly the ground doesn’t get too cold. All my trees do fine too. Although Annona and stuff need better rootstocks or rootmakers too.

Congratulations and well done👍 Five years ago, I was getting longan (the better of the two IMHO) for $2/lb. Now that they're going for almost $5/lb, makes me want to grow my own tree.

Funny you say that
I was eating some fresh quality longan from FL right after I had my lychees and they tasted so bland.
Don’t get me wrong though longan is pretty good too.
It’s nice they have different seasons in FL so you can have a wide window of fruits.

I’m thankful my lychee is behind Florida schedule so I get a larger window to enjoy lychee fruits.
