In search of Ortanique
« on: April 17, 2025, 04:46:36 PM »
This Citrus is a Jamaican variety mix of tangerine and orange. It sure has proven to be very difficult to locate the true variety here, over the years. . If anyone has any leads on this one would be greatly appreciated.

It is easily identified with its pancake like shape . It’s more wide like a donut and my favorite by far.

The only one I know of is at the Quail Botanical Garden (San Diego). I grafted one years ago and didn't like the fruit as much as others. Now it is difficult to get one because of the quarantine for the HLB disease.

Harris nursery in Lithia Florida had them years ago but I looked online and
I am not even sure they are still open?
I went there years ago and one of the owners loaded my car and shorted me
trees. I called them and she said I was wrong.
I found out later they did that all the time to people.

I’ve found one place that say they have, them they call them unique oranges. And they only sell the fruit and I’ll have to check back when they are in season. Al’sfamilyfarms.com

It's actually illegal to import citrus into Florida. I may be wrong, but I don't think it can even be done with permits.

Florida has strict regulations in regards to citrus.

Budwood appears to be available from UCR, provided you're not in Texas or Florida.

Continuing my journey to disprove those who say "You can't grow that in the desert" since 2013.

You’re probably right. I have never done it before and I was in over my head doing research this weekend.

I bet you can find it in Florida. Ask every nursery that sells citrus trees. I got mine from Sam's a year ago.

https://recordbuckfarms.com/citrus-trees/

Record Buck propagates it. Click the link above and go to the “oranges” section.

That likely explains how Galka found one at Sam’s.

Since Record Buck is wholesale you wouldn’t be able to order from them directly, but you could probably contact a local nursery and see if they can order one for you from Record Buck.

Sam’s club?! Do you have pictures of your crop by chance?
This was pretty much my last resort.

@ Murahili I’m not getting my hopes up yet it seems the nurseries might all be cultivating tangor as you mentioned earlier it would be illegal in most cases to import it. But definitely worth a shot I didn’t even think of taking that route.thanks much guys

Yep, Sam's club had a bunch of citrus trees for sale in spring one year. Also, I recall seeing one at Lowe's ones.
I don't have a picture, sorry. The tree is still
young,  it had 2 fruits for the first time last
 year.
You can also call Excalibur nursery. I've heard they had them also.

Excalibur may have it. When I was working there around 2008 I remember finding a bunch of Ortaniques there that were neglected so I moved them up to the front and they all sold pretty quickly.

dolomis,

The Ortanique is a type of tangor. Tangor is just the name for tangerine/mandarin x orange hybrids. There are a lot of different citrus that fall under the tangor category.

Yes that is correct, essentially it is the similar combination but not the precise combination in circulation USA . It really is shaped like a flying sauce.. I know it’s not good practice to go by pictures .
