Prevalent pests this year
« on: August 06, 2025, 08:30:14 AM »
The summer in south Florida is shaping up to be a relatively pest free growing season.

White Weevils are way down, and scale, mealy bugs, annona seed borers and white fly are non existent. I bag my fruits so I do not see fruit fly on my Guava.

Am I being fortunate or are others in So. Flo. seeing the lack of these pests?

PS, I do have an unknown (any help here would be appreciated) pest infecting only new growth on some of my guava trees. The new growth curls, turns brown and dies but I do not see anything causing the issue. I'm spraying new growth with all seasons horticultural oil and it seems to help?

Regards,

I have noticed a shocking lack of white fly, leaf miner and reduced scale.  Typically my pepper plants are constantly under attack. There is a noticeable abundance of slugs which keep eating all my veggies planted in the ground.

Could it be thrips? They are very small.

White weevils down, citrus root weevils up
very little scale and mealybug, leafhoppers up

powdery mildew was way down
Anthracnose was prevalent early in the year due to record storms and rainfall last year, but is less prevalent with the quieter season, despite wet June and July

Asian Citrus psyllids, I see fewer and fewer probably due to most citrus being destroyed.

The only evidence I've seen of any infestation was on one single folded and dried leaf (of the many dead ones without signs) there were a few what appeared to be teenie tiny white webs?

This is all good to hear but it's a mystery.

This morning while pruning my Guava I discovered a number of "pseudococcus" mealy bug. Out comes the 4 seasons horticultural oil.

I had a ton of scales on my mangos. Horticultural oil did nothing. Had to use a systemic insecticide. Twice, as directed. The new growth looks clean. Saw some powdery mildew on the second bloom of my Kathy. But that was not a problem at all.
It’s been gazillion degrees outside for quite a while and zero rains too. We don’t even have a whole lot of evening bugs now.
