Annona tree dropping fruits
« on: August 12, 2025, 10:55:34 PM »
Hi!! I’m from Texas and live in zone 8a. My Annona tree is in a 15-gallon pot and is about 4 years old. The fruits start turning dark purple and eventually dry out into a hard shell. Additionally, some leaves regularly turn yellow and then black, as shown in the images. I experienced the same issue last year as well. I water the tree twice a day when the temperature is above 95F. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions or solutions would be appreciated. TIA! 😊

I had the same problem on two of my cherimoya trees.I tough they needed fertilizer but the problem was grubs were eating the roots. I dug over 50 of those m@$%#s the first time.

I have experienced the same thing with my 25 gal potted sugar apple tree. The majority of the set fruits mummify and turn dark purple/rock hard. I have never been able to figure out why…too little water? Fertilizer? Some other issue?

Leaves on my tree were somewhat chlorotic but have been getting better.

I’ve also noticed that here in FL as the summer rains have arrived, the fruit set is improved and several fruits are staying green.

Do sugar apples need heavy fertilization? Should they be watered daily in the pot during the hot summer? Any other tips are appreciated.

@Tr0picalFan what fertilizer do you use? My tree did the same thing. I just got it last year. It’s doing the same things your plant is doing   :-[

I'm in the CA central valley, hot and dry.
I have several in the grounds and 2 in containers. There are always some fruits that became dark, dried up, and dropped. Many stayed and matured. I water mine every other day, sometimes skipping 2 days in between. I check the soil often, because I'm very guilty of overwatering and have killed several other trees due to that bad habit. I fertilize a few times a year.

Seems common on the sugar apples here, I hand pollinate the trees and have lots of fruit set, but then the trees only hold what they can handle and lots turn black and  drop off, production has improved with age and a larger root system.

Every other week seems pretty extreme to me.
