Brogdon-Lula
« on: August 14, 2025, 09:54:45 AM »
Hi. Thinking of buying two avocado trees and was wondering if anyone has experienced the Brogdon and Lula together. My question is if they will flower close enough in the season to complement each other.
Thank you.

Have you tasted Lula? The tree is productive and the avocado flavor is good, but it is very sweet, which I find distracting when eating an avocado.

You might consider Reed as a Type A flower replacement that fruits in late season. Brogdon & Reed would be a nice pairing for flavor.

Most avocados flower around the same time (mid/late winter), regardless of when the fruit matures.

Truth is I don't remember the last time I had avocado. I'm trying to get a couple options with some differences. As flowers go, I've read what you say, but I've also seen where some weren't flowering while others were.
Thank you.

Dupuis/Monroe would be a good summer/winter, type A/type B combination to consider.

Does reed avocado do well in Florida?

I'll be adding a Nishikawa this weekend. Needed another type B and the fruit is very similar to Haas

I don't have personal experience but it is getting more and more attention from growers and apparently there are members on the forum that are successfully growing it here in FL. The fruit is actually for sale on the Lara Farms website right now, so I question my earlier post about it being late season (even though I ate some last winter?).

I agree with John, Dupuis/Monroe would be another well engineered pair of early/late A/B avocados. You could also do Dupuis/Nishikawa for the same effect, I think the Nishikawa tree is a bit more contained and I do prefer the fruit quality to Monroe, even though Monroe is very good.

An example of what leads to some confusion regarding flowering. "Popular varieties like 'Haas' typically bloom January-March in California. In Florida, 'Simmonds' avocados flower April-June.". Of course, they throw in both Florida and California, so maybe 'in Florida' they all flower at the same time?
Thank you.

They have a Reed at the F&S Park and almost all the fruit are full of scab. Not sure if that is caused by humidity or what exactly.

Lula is another one that scabs pretty heavily. It doesn't affect the flavor but that could be an issue if you give a lot of fruit away, some people might think you're giving them rotten avocados.

That's what I noticed. My Hass, Lamhass, Reed, Sir Prize flowered  all of them, almost same time.

PIN website says Reed was tried as a commerical variety in Florida at one time, but was rejected by growers.  They mention low production, but maybe appearance was an issue, too?

I have an acquaintance with a Reed tree, he gets fairly good crops from it, it seems like a much slower grower here than CA or MX. I had a tree in the ground- it seemed to hate the soil from the day I planted it- it died after 6 months and I haven't replaced it.

I had a Lula, I believe the other was a Monroe, and it was a good combination, both made fruit.  The Lula was all scab, big seed, and little flesh, and the spouse could not stand it, despite loving 'cado.  The Lula had to go.  I top worked it to Oro negro, and you can find that story elsewhere on the forum.
Bottom line is inland SW Florida, with high humidity was not great for Lula.

I had pretty good luck with Lula, Brogdon and Monroe. Tried Oro Negro, but it won't do well in my yard. 2 consecutive trees died a slow death in the same spot. Thought it was the spot, but a Sapodilla I planted in the same spot is doing well.

I believe avocados are highly sensitive to climate. The Reed avocado, for example, is one of the most consistent producers in California, but that doesn’t seem to be the case in Florida.

I plotted the spots for the Brogdon and Lula this evening with plans to put them in the ground tomorrow. Good to know yours are doing well in what I'm guessing is a similar weather zone, though I think you're both colder and warmer in the respective seasons than I am.

Thank you! I thought to not plant them together when I found out about the wilting, but went to Phuket on that one.
