Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White on Miracle berry
« on: December 29, 2020, 11:17:48 PM »
For that advice you should consult the label. Try finding out specifically what kind of mildew you have first (assuming that is what the problem is). The most common types are powdery and downy mildew. I'm guessing that you have powdery because of the white stuff, but you can look at some pictures of the two on-line to verify this for yourself.

My memory says that they use sulfer for powdery mildew on mangoes. The trouble is that because of high levels of fungicide use, some mildews have built up resistance to certain fungicides. If you only get partial control, switch to a different fungicide rather than spraying the same one again.

You may also notice that the affected leaves turn brown after applying a fungicide. Typically, this happens because the mildew had already killed the leaf cells, but they had not had time to dry up yet.

That is pretty much what I know, I hope it helps. My miracle berry never suffers from fungus problems, so I can't give you more specific advice.

Just because it says doesn't make it so. Hopefully I didn't get flim-flammed.

Leaves look much bigger than my sugar apples

That sure looks like an atemoya to me, and since Geffner is the most common, there would be little reason to mislabel it as such.

2703
I got a 15 gallon geffner in the Summer of 2019.
I planted it in the ground and let it grow the rest of the Summer. This Spring after it flushed
out it was about 8' tall and 10' wide. It over produced fruit and some of it didn't size up.
I will thin one fruit every 6" for now on. It is a very productive tree.. I would think you could
keep it 10 x 10 and get around 25 fruit easy. You probably will get 50 fruit and will have to thin.
I never hand pollinated and it was producing 2-3 in each cluster. Did you want to keep
it smaller to protect it in the Winter?
More of a placement issue.
I do have a question.  Hypothetically if you were able to obtain Cherilata budwood  could you graft it to your Atemoya tree?
Yes it would be compatible. I have a cherilata I got this year that is grafted on pond apple and I pugged it late
this Fall. The leaves are still dark green while all my other annonas are partially defoliated and dormant and what leaves are left
are old and about to fall off. I have sugar apples, atemoyas, custard apples, 1 ilama , 1 sour sop and 1 bright green
cherilata. The cherilata is a beast. I have had 5 nights in the 38-40F range already.

Brilliant! I would love to know how that combination lasts long term.

That appears to be a mildew. Since the leaves are curling it is probably harmful. You might want to use a fungicide.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are these bananas Manzano bananas?
« on: December 29, 2020, 09:37:42 PM »
Can Burro be eaten both as a plantain and banana?

I eat them fried when they are green (they taste basically like a potato at that stage) and as a fresh banana when they are very ripe. They have a banana flavor with a little subacid tang and are sweet enough when fully ripe. They also make an excellent addition to smoothies because they don't overwhelm all of the other flavors like Cavendish. Technically they are classified as a "cooking banana," which is half way between a desert banana and a plantain.

Those do not look like what I call Apple Banana or what Publix is selling as Manzano. I do notice a whitish coating ("bloom") that is not common in many bananas. Maybe that will be helpful in getting it identified.

I been knowing about this plant for long time and I never heard anyone, anywhere refer to Monstera by either of those name’s, thankfully. Suddenly happier for the company I keep.
Has anyone else around here heard these names before?
Well, aside from the most common name swiss cheese plant, Mexican breadfruit is another "common" name for this plant.

I have heard it called Swiss Cheese Plant (I believe it is more commonly used in the ornamental nursery trade). But Mexican Breadfruit was a new one for me.

I think the reference to Suruga being grown in the warmest districts may have been referring to the island of Kyushu, but it was not specified.

Ok, it was referring to the southernmost part of the "main islands," then.

2709
Peak vents would be ideal. Hot air rises after all. Before AC, many homes here in Florida were designed to create a hot air draft that pulled cool air from under the house inside as the hot air rose to the peak. It works best on taller structures, and some wealthy people even had gas burners in little cupolas specifically to create this draft. I was shocked when I heard about this from an AC tech, but this was even before electric fans. People had no other way to move air.

Trying out Suruga here. Have my doubts about fruiting due to low chill hours here, but giving it a try. Came from a FL seller, so maybe they mean it when listing it as good for zone 10b.

I read somewhere that Suruga was grown in the warmest districts of Japan, it was one of the latest season varieties with a brix over 20 percent. I wonder how much chill their Southernmost Islands get?  Presumably it would be fairly low chill. I grew it in Charleston,SC over 20 years ago and it was very nice Nov-Dec fruit there. The best non astringent type I have tasted. Larger and sweeter fruit than Fuyu with better color.
Higher chill location than Florida but you are in for a treat if it fruits for you.

The Okinowa islands are the southern most part of Japan. They are famous for their cherry blossom festival (prunus campanulata) and a low chill peach cultivar that was used for rootstock; appropriately named "Okinowa." I know that I have see a chart that listed the chill requirement for Okinowa in Florida, but I can't find it at the moment.

2711
Does anyone have any experience growing this (especially in Florida)? I understand that the unopened flower bud is considered a delicacy but is only availabe for a month or two each year. Sugarcane grows easily for me and I thought this might be interesting. Mike T posted about it on one of the sugarcane threads.

2712
Could it possibly be chill damage? I was under the impression that Button Mangosteen was very cold sensitive. The pictures remind me of what my Soursop looks like right now after a couple nights in the high 30s. Maybe someone who has grown this particular plant can comment on its relative cold tollerence (or lack there of).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fallen bamboo leaves??
« on: December 26, 2020, 08:23:35 PM »
According to the bamboo section in my ECHO handbook, bamboo does best when you leave the natural leaf mulch in place because it keeps the soil moist and allows the plant to recycle nutrients. However, those same benefits would also apply to your fruit trees. I have seen a local person who rakes them up all the time and his bamboo is doing fine. He actually adds them to his tilapia pond, claiming that it improves the flavor of the meat. Presumably, this is because the tilapia are eating the algae that grows on the leaves instead of "bottom muck."

Merry Christmas to those who are celebrating!
Blessings and good vibes to all members and their families.

Merry Christmas Triloba Tracker! I'll have to watch some of your youtube videos. Also, it took me the longest time to figure out that you are standing with a guy in a paw paw costume on your prifile pic. Now that I know what it is, it makes sense. Lol!

Finally I get to eat!

Thanks Santa for the frost bag for my M4 mango tree

The food looks delicious! I hope the frost bag keeps your tree warm tonight. It is chilly out there.

Haha very interesting!

The website I bought the persimmons from said all the varieties I purchased fruit in zone 10. I guess we will see!

Willisorchards.com if anyone was curious

I believe that they are refering to USDA zone 10 for California. The trouble with using USDA hardiness zones is that they do not take chill hours into consideration. Our chill hours are reduced compaired to the same zone in California because our cold weather comes in spurts rather than staying cool consistently. That being said, Fuyu has performed well enough for us here in Florida Zone 9b even with last year's low chill hours.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: HLB Could Be Gone In 3 Years

I was told that Meiwa kumquats were not bothered by HLB.  If so could I use Meiwa rootstock for other citrus varieties.

We had several Meiwa Kumquats that eventually succumbed to HLB.
