So, uhh, after a number of years of failing on grafting, I finally won. The Fuerte and Gem grafted safely.

The avocado fuerte scions on a bacon rootstock worked. Now one of the branches is clearly flowering, but I was told it would take 3 years???

But I'm worried on if I should let it flower on the first year and produce fruit?

The same with a white sapote tree. It's only been one year and it's flowering already on that one branch. Should I let it go to flower and fruit or wait for longer?

I would not let them hold fruit the first year after grafting. That could potentially stunt the tree and since both have heavy fruits there is the potential for the graft to break from the weight.

Should I wait the full 3 years or should I just wait another year?

That is based on how much your graft grows. I have seen some 2 year trees that were large enough, but it is probably wise to wait for the 3rd year.

I have left Avocado grafts hold fruit after 1 year and they seemed to have done ok. These were grafted to in-ground tree that was 7+ years old. The growing grafted branches were at at least sharpie thick. Most fruit dropped though, only got a couple. It probably also helped that they were on the smaller side (Sharwil).

I left my grafted CT#7 hold 3 large fruits even though the grafted branch was only 2 ft long and 1/4" diameter. The 3 fruits grew to mature ripe fruits. Then in about 2 months the entire grafted branched dried up and died. All my other grafted branches on the same tree were still fine. So don't let it hold too many fruits to soon. I still have not seen another CT#7 fruit on my other grafted branches.

In my experience, all Hass variety flowers after 1 year of grafting but they don't fruit. All tiny fruits drop. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks. I took off the flowers anyway and apologized to the tree. The graft isn't strong enough yet, though the Fuerte on the tree are branching furiously. I do plan to graft it with other things besides Gem and Fuerte.

I was also surprised that the white Sapote tried to flower so soon. But I took those flowers off and told it next year.

I have wood sorrel growing at the base to help with the nitrogen and to keep the roots cool. Hopefully, it'll try again next year and my 8 long years of giving a tree that was asexual will come to an end when it fruits.
