Salix floridana
« on: January 22, 2026, 10:31:09 AM »
Hi, I know this is not a tropical fruit tree but it is the only willow that grows in the Florida area and I'm particularly interested in growing this plant for its natural microbial properties (similar to all other willow species).  This bark would be valuable to utilize in propagation and also to help strengthen sick/weak tropical fruit seedlings or transplants.  Apparently this is an endangered native species and I cannot find even one existing in Florida (at least not searchable online), and would love to know if anyone has any useful information where to obtain seeds or cuttings of this tree.  Thanks!

You can also try Carolina Willow, Salix caroliniana, which is also native to Florida and is alot easier to find. It is native throughout the state, as opposed to the Florida willow that is only native to North Florida and nearby Georgia.

Will do!  Is S. carolinia able to survive in Central FL grow zone 10a?

Yes, it grows great in central Florida . They are all along the Kissimmee River. Bees love them. They are one of the first things to bloom. I have been walking in the marsh along the river when there were thousands of them  in the willows and it sounds like an airport.

not to be pedantic but surely you mean anti-microbial properties?

unless you are taking about live soil balance and promoting good microbes?
