Tropical Fruit Discussion / Headed to Oahu, Hawaii
« on: December 18, 2024, 07:21:10 PM »
I'll be visiting Oahu for a week at the end of the year. Any recommendations for places to get local fruit? Any nice nurseries to visit? If any forum members have time to meet up and show me your trees, that would be awesome! I can bring scions too, if anyone wants anything.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What happened to my poor avocado tree?
« on: November 24, 2024, 10:35:42 PM »
Looks like avocado lace bug infection. A pretty bad case of it. I would check under the leaves and rub out any of the black pepper looking stuff there.
Is there any kind of spray or treatment for that?

I'm sure there are treatments for this, but I haven't looked into that.  I usually take a hose, lay under my tree, and spray water upwards, aiming for the underside of the leaves.  This usually knocks off the little bugs that live under the leaves.  Yes I do get soaked myself but it works. I'm pretty sure I lost a Wurtz avocado tree to this back before I knew what this was. This stuff can spread to other avocado trees as well. Good luck.

This Simmonds avocado tree was looking fine and healthy 4 months ago.  Then little burn spots started to appear in the middle of some leaves.  Now it has progressed to this stage.  What do you think could be happening?  This doesn't look like laurel wilt, and my Monroe tree hasn't been affected, nor have a dozen other avocado trees in the neighbhorhood.  I have been using city water regularly, but not overwatering.  Could it be something in the water?  But my other tree looks fine.  Any ideas, insights, or suggestions would be helpful.  I'd hate to lose the tree and have to start over with another.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango ID Help
« on: October 28, 2024, 09:38:35 PM »
Can anyone help me ID this variety?  This was picked from a 25 -30 ft tall tree in the LA County area.  Flesh is smooth and fiber-less.  Texture was just like Sweet Tart, but flavor not like Sweet Tart.  I taste strong pineapple notes near the peel.  Nice acid component too.  Seed is small. I suspect this is a seedling. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jakfruit tasting reviews
« on: July 04, 2024, 11:28:13 AM »
I love reading these jackfruit tasting reviews. Keep them coming.

Here in California, we get jackfruits imported from Mexico. It's highly likely they are fruit from seedlings, because they're wildly variable. You don't know what you're gonna get. I've had some extraordinary ones and some average ones. Some are crunchy, others are soft, etc. It's fun shopping for them, kinda like playing a jackfruit lottery.

@MasonG31,
Is that orange colored or the photo makes it look like one?

Fruitfool

It's a red variety.

I do have an orange variety as well that is very good.

A forum member was kind enough to send me some scions of an unnamed variety he grows in Florida.  He grows several seedlings, and this one is his favorite.  My grafts fruited for the first time this year, and this fruit was amazing!  Smooth, sweet, with a burst of flavor.  No funky aftertaste or off flavors.  A winner for sure.  The seeds will be planted, and I'm going to graft this one onto some of my other trees.  So far this year, my favorites are Vermilion, Zill Dark, and this excellent unnamed variety!

Peach Cobbler- making mostly leaves not flowers.  Will be my 1st tasting though so i'm looking forward to it :)

shot, cool.

I love watching the reaction of people who try the Peach Cobbler mango for the first time.  Hope you get fruit.

I would plant a seedling from a really good cherimoya.  If the fruit turns out to be no good, you'll have a nice, strong rootstock to graft onto.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Mexican Sunflower Cuttings!
« on: January 08, 2024, 12:03:17 PM »
I’m selling cuttings of the Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia Diversifolia).  This is the ultimate chop and drop plant.  Produces loads and loads of fresh mulch.  Also produces beautiful yellow flowers that attracts lots of pollinating insects.  Really easy plant to take care of.  Super drought tolerant and grows like a weed.  Just set it and forget it.  $4 each (minimum order of 5 cuttings).  Shipping is $9.  I can cut various sizes.  Standard size is 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch.  Just let me know.

Ok we need AJ to say if he prefers nabal or sharwil.  Nabal is nicexcellent but sharwil still is better IMO.

Guess it just comes down to personal preference.

Nabal is my favorite.  Best avocado I’ve ever eaten.  Sharwil is in my top 3, along with Reed.  Those 3 picked at the right time are world class, and they can go toe to toe against each other.

dark fruit. Fruits are big, dark, and sweet (when it is really ripe) with high acidity.    Not much gasoline smell.

Red fruit. It was grafted last year.  Fruits are even bigger, red, and sweet.  Not much gasoline smell.

Is your red fruit a named variety? Where did you find it?  That’s a good looking fruit. Nice size.

Zill Dark harvested just this morning. Lots of resin, lots of sweetness, a little acidity to give it some balance. I just wished my tree would produce more. I only have about 7 more on the tree.  Seems to be a shy bearer at least for me.

What type of soil did you plant it in?

M4 could be called:

Mr. Coconut
Coconut Extreme
Coconut Dream

 ::) ;)

These are great names.  M4 deserves the late season crown.  It’s top tier in my opinion.
