Not sure exactly here in palm city, so preoccupied with Christmas that today was first day I walked my yard, it’s pretty clear that soursops ( grafted and seedlings) got whipped, immediate full brown leaves do not pass go, while also the few Annona urbaniana that I have got whipped too (this is a Caribbean origin I think so probably why and I don’t know many growing this one for reference to experiencing brief freezes/near freezing). It’s possible others in my yard will have a delayed browning, but so far the salaks seem bullet proof.

The painter isn’t mushy, it has a nice firmness resembling more cherimoya than it’s part reticulata parent, there is a lot of berry flavor in the fruit reminds me of strawberries and cream which I have never experienced in the cherimoyas I’ve eaten which are good but really apples/oranges in that comparison. Maybe it doesn’t perform well in Cali? That’s my only possible shread of explanation to brads comment 🤷‍♂️

To add it was formally know as cherilata whereas it’s now called “painter.” The fruit is exceptional, out of the ones I grow…dream, geffner, Lisa, na dai sugar apple, Fernandez reticulata… the painter is my favorite but preferences will vary.

Some pics from a fruit I picked off my tree this year, just fyi this is painter scions I grafted to soursop:

Check with Lara farms, I don’t see any on the site for sale but I spoke to Julian earlier in the year and he had both free stone, and cling types for sale.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Grafting wax jambu help
« on: November 24, 2022, 12:18:21 PM »
Hey Patrick,

Thanks for your response, I only do cleft graft cuts but my question is scion prep and do you bag in humidity dome with a few trimmed leaves or take all leaves of scion and wrap entire scion?

Here’s a pic of the seedling, it was originally entirely albino but then acquired some chlorophyll making it a neon green vs the other seedlings which are Forrest green. Love the color and foliage and I want to see this fruit out someday.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting wax jambu help
« on: November 24, 2022, 07:59:11 AM »
I have a rare seedling wax jambu that I want to clone as I’m somewhat worried it could die unexpectedly, and I want to hedge that risk. It’s about two feet tall and growing as a single leader not branching. I’m thinking I could tip prune it to induce branching and then graft the cutting. So then the question:

Does anyone have experience grafting wax jambu and what methods did you employ?

Thanks,

Joe

Hey Kaz,

Are there any pics of the fruit from these trees? Also if you could post some pics of the leaves off your meridia tree I would appreciate seeing them.

Give D’s Fruit trees a call down near homestead, saw his in ground tree in person, it is truly truly a dwarf tree, thing was maybe up to my chest growing like a bush with fruit on it, bought three scions from him and got one to take! 👍 I’ve never seen a mamey grow like that, been to lara farms before and seen all the standard ones at fruit and spice park and they are large trees, really incredible to see a mamey bush with fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Salak first flowers, palm city FL
« on: November 10, 2022, 10:06:41 AM »
Went out today to assess yard post storm Nicole, noticed one of my salaks is flowering. Seems of all the things this took a beating as the long fronds catch the wind while shallow weak roots… if planting out where high winds are a concern place in protected area 👍

Wondering if these are male or female flowers or still too soon to tell?

Here’s a great link on different types: https://www.thesnakefruit.com/blog/snake-fruit/what-is-salak-bali/

Originally bought these seeds from Han sun as “honey salak” and have a few growing out in my yard now, hoping to try this fruit someday and todays news reignites the hope!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Neighbor pesticide spray
« on: October 19, 2022, 12:28:27 AM »
Best I can think of is contact company and and ask to read up on the products they are using if they even know. Also ask your neighbor how long they plan to use the service as typically mosquitos are somewhat seasonal. You may not have to deal with this long term if they don’t see a benefit or are unhappy with service.

Once I was walking in my yard inspecting my super Julie mango tree, and I and the tree were heavily misted by a worker on my neighbors roof with a mask on that looked like he was power washing the roof shingles. When he was done I walked up and said hey what did you spray on that roof because it smells strongly and you indirectly sprayed me and my tree. He said it was some antifungal compound, and “not to worry because he uses it all the time and gets exposed and is fine” meanwhile he was wearing facial protection. He obviously didn’t know the chemicals so I called the company. Turns out the owner of the company picked up and he had no idea either, turns out he bought the company from previous owner which invented the chemical concoction. Literally no one knew what was being sprayed, the poor worker could have long term health ramifications, and because of his managers carelessness and lack of oversight in a small franchise/business.

Hey Kevin,

Were these trees from the seeds I sent you? If in fact the surviving few are only male please let me know as I’m having another crop coming in soon and we can try again man 👍

It's cool you found some. I thought about buying a tree at that nursery but haven't yet. I'd trade you something for a few seeds. Is this species dioecious?

Honestly unsure how to germinate these seeds and if they are viable, the seeds are surprisingly tiny and look like the seeds in red pepper flake seasoning size wise. If I get any seeds to germinate I’ll circle back.

Get at @exoticfruitfarm (Erika) on Instagram i was able to buy some Japanese raisin fruit plus Silas woods sapodillas , great packaging. I liked the Japanese raisin too and hoping I can germinate these seeds. Thing about them is you gotta eat them shriveled up and dried out looking then they are sweet with pear raisin flavor, when fresh looking not sweet and kinda astringent.

Ended up going with listing pencil off Amazon, great recommendation Mike, cheap, writes easy, easy to read, stays on, and is fast ….yes the metal tags will last till apocalypse but but when you wanna label 100 plus random pots quickly this is the way I think 👍

Really curious to try this, as I enjoy dried figs and dates in my morning oatmeal and on their own which I hear it’s similar?

If anyone is selling please reach out.

The best guava I’ve ever eaten came off orkine’s tree:

If I recall right he said it’s a seedling from Mexican cream, which confuses me how the pinkish flesh, but this was a legit guava. My tasting notes were sweet flavor with some watermelon notes, hardly noticeable bitter/skin tannin.

Currently I use a silver sharpie marker to write/identity what is planted in my black plant pots. It has worked well in the past, though recently I’m having an issue where I’ll buy multiple packs of silver sharpie markers and they seem to be defective/dried out/the flow of ink isn’t constant.

So looking to see if anyone can recommend a better permanent marker brand? My favorite means of identifying the plants is permanent silver/white lettering on the black pots. I’m open to new ideas also.

Thanks,
-Joe
