Jackfruit - Plant in Fall or Wait
« on: October 03, 2022, 09:22:13 PM »
I wish I had made this decision earlier in the year but I have a 1gal Mai 1 on the way from Lara Farms. I’ve heard jackfruit have sensitive roots so I’m weighing my options of planting it now in early October or up-potting now and leaving it in a pot until spring. Assuming I can protect it from the night or two of frost this winter, would it be better to get into the ground now?  Are there any other concerns with planting out a baby jackfruit like this?

I don't get frost here but in my experience, Jackfruit have been very easy to grow. Aside from the frost concern, I'd say earlier is better for root development. We planted a jackfruit seedling straight into the ground after sprouting in water a little over a year ago. It's now 7-8 foot high.

Thanks, I was leaning towards getting it into the ground asap so that’s what I’ll do.

I planted mine late fall/early winter and it's done fine. I did cover it when we had the bad cold snap last year.

Good call on putting it in the ground. It sat for about a month then started pushing out new growth and hasn’t stopped with this warm weather we’ve been getting. I had it in under light shade for the first few weeks but it’s now getting full sun.

It is a risk to plant in the fall, but my experience has been things perform much better the following year if they make it through the winter. I'd risk it.

I also planted mine in Nov several years ago. It was small enough to wrap and place hot water bottles if needed in a cold snap and fared just fine even in last January's upper 20s freeze. Good luck!
