ISO: Hala fruit (kewda/screw pine).
« on: March 26, 2023, 03:03:43 PM »
Does anyone know if Hala fruit is grown anywhere on Oahu?

If not, is anyone selling them or know where to get them (nationwide)?

No idea why they are so hard to find

My neighbor has a tree that fruits, I can see when the fruit are ready to harvest and if he will let me have any, they look heavy AF and might be pricy shipping 🤷‍♂️

Hey guys really sorry on the late replies to the DM’s on this subject I just seriously kept forgetting, here is a shot of my neighbors tree I asked him about the fruit and he said go for it, I don’t mind mailing these out for a nominal fee though I have ZERO idea how to properly pick this fruit in it’s ripe stage if anyone cares to advise?

Thanks,

-joe

Are these ones commonly in landscaping equivalent to one grown for the fruit?  Does anyone know anyone who grows them for the fruit?  I know there are different species, but just asking because I've tried some of the fruit and couldn't understand how anyone called it edible.  So fibrous and not really even worth messing with the ones I tried which seemed ripe, and I tried varying stages at Fruit and Spice before as well.  I'll admit ignorance, but these are grown a fair bit in S FL.

correct me if I’m wrong but the fruit isn’t that crazy; I mean visually sure it looks amazing just not a lot of flesh. I’m pretty sure people use the leaves of the tree as a vanilla substitute

edit: wait I'm confusing the vanilla substitute with pandan

The Hala’s drop their ripe pods from those giant pineapple looking fruit.
The pods are used for Lei’s and the leaves for weaving and thatching.
I have seen the different color fruits littering the ground but never tasted one.
I don’t think they have ever been selected for flavor but were/are instead useful in many facets of life in the tropics.
I recently saw a 6 acre ocean front property that was 99% Hala forest, very cool and inviting place.

The pandan plant normally used culinarily is Pandanus amaryllifolius, which is not the same as Hala

Hala can be used, and some cultivars have better fruit than others

We usually chew the pods to get the sweet juice. Super fibrous. Just a chew and spit out the fiber kind of experience. Shoots, I literally just threw a couple fruits out.
The best time to plant a fruit tree was 20 years ago. The next best time to plant one is now.
