WTB White Sapote Excalibur Suebell Scions
« on: March 10, 2023, 02:50:03 PM »
Hello! First time poster. I've read on this forum that there is a white sapote that was (is?) Sold from Excalibur that may have been called suebell but has been identified as not suebell. Looking to buy scions.

Can you explain more about this?  I got a SueBelle from Excalibur in person a few years ago.

Hey so for a few years I've read through posts here and I'll be honest I don't know which white sapote thread it is. People where saying the Excalibur Suebell was better/different than what is actually suebell.

So whether you have suebell or a false suebell I would love to buy a few scions from you.

Do you have pictures of the tree and/or fruit?

The underside of my suebell leaves is soft like velvet, though the fuzz is barely visible

Thank you both for the details. Maybe the other members were mistaken or bought a single instance of something mis labelled.

Try Marta at reallygoodplants. She described the “false suebell” as having good flavor. On the other hand regular suebell didn’t receive good rating.

“False Suebelle
The skin is not bitter. Very soft sweet melting flesh with a hint of acidity.”

Hello! I have recently purchased a white sapote from Excalibur. They in fact do NOT know what varieties they have, they are not labeled. Suebelle, Redlands are some names thrown around when they talk about them.
From a few threads I understand that Richard (the owner) got them from Fruit and Spice park and named some of them USDA, that’s what I have on my 25-gallon pot, barely visible but I found it.
From what I read, that USDA is in fact better than Suebelle, I have 3 fruits on, hope they don’t fall off after transplanting - it’s been a week and they are still on. Can’t wait to try.
They do have a couple varieties - based on leaves, so it’s a gamble lol.
Will update when/if I try the fruit.
Mulberries: Pakistani, White Shahtoot, Thai Dwarf, Worlds Best, Jan’s Best, Valdosta, Maui
Banana: Dwarf Namwah, Ice Cream, Unknown
Mangos: Cogshall, Honey Kiss, Neelam, Ice Cream
passion fruit
Mysore raspberries
Evergl tomatos
Hass Avocado
Jamaican cherry
Barbados cherry
Sugar Apple

In regards to Marta when she opened scion shop just recently that false suebell was not listed so I assumed she is not growing it.

Thank you Upurock very curious about your opinion. I read on this forum and elsewhere that many premium varieties that grow well in California don't do well here so when I read about the Excalibur naming situation it peaked my interest.... An incorrectly named variety that's actually reported to be better than it's incorrect name.

I went to Excalibur in 2021 but they did not have any White Sapote according to the driver of the golf cart.

When I visited Excalibur and got a suebell it was labelled as such.  So were most of the trees I saw there.  I'm sure they have some disorder but it wasn't like the whole place was without labels and they are going from memory.

To be clear this isn't a bashing of Excalibur as all of their inventory was very well laid out when I visitied. I ended up getting a Red Hybrid jaboticaba, pitangatuba and a couple other items.

However there was clearly a labelling situation that occurred based on people buying suebell that were not.

Here is another:

Notice people have started referencing it as "Excalibur Suebell"

I certainly believe you, this particular type sounds interesting to me also.  I started noting my the seeds/scion/plants I acquire as "from so-and-so" as I suspect there will be a lot of variability once things come to fruit.
