C. depressa Shikuwasa Cold Hardiness

(1/1)

deRoode:
Hi,

I have some shikuwasa rooted cuttings, and soon some seeds that I want to use as rootstock. Does anyone have experience how cold hardy it is?

pagnr:
Are you growing them indoors in pots or outdoors in the soil ?
I have grown Shikuwasa seedlings in pots.
Doesn't seem too sensitive, seems reasonably tough.
At least on the same level as other mandarin rootstocks or sweet orange rootstocks.
Doesn't seem particularly prone to root disease problems.
I had some spare seedlings that I used as Microcitrus hybrid rootstocks, seems fine.
However I am not in a cold winter area. We have frosts maybe minus 3'C to minus 5'C.
Frosts are getting rarer over recent years.

Peep:
I have a shekwasha on carrizo (still need to take a scion from it to put on poncirus), but no winter experience yet.

On the internet I've seen temperatures mentioned from -12 to -15.
Some of these might be in case the tree is on poncirus rootstock I expect.

I'm from Antwerp by the way, where in the Netherlands are you located?

I have a similar one, also on carrizo. I am looking to use it as a rootstock, but also to graft in on flying dragon.
Do you have any sources on the -12 and -15? I had difficulty finding them.

I am from the south of the Netherlands

Peep:
Vessieres (document from the nursery): -15
Olivier Biggio (in his book): -13
French forum and two other nurseries mention -12

I'm also fairly sure I've seen -14 mentioned somewhere as well.

I think -15 is too optimistic.
