Ilama seed germination
« on: January 07, 2015, 12:23:13 AM »
I just checked my ilama seeds and am excited to see some popping up. The odd thing is that the bin labeled "floaters" are the first to rise so far! The seeds were started on 12/13. This is also my first attempt.

Congrats, Bob! Those are pretty hard to germinate.
My experience with Annona seeds is that I consider them as floaters only if they stay floated after 3 days of soaking. And even then, some floaters will germinate but they don't last long and will generally succumb to fungal attack.

I have separated floaters and sinkers many times with annona but found they don't have different germination rates or speed. This being said I have also seed seed batches that all floated and none germinated.Out of maybe 1000 A.crassiflora seeds I have 2 that popped up after less than a year.
I have a few small Guillermo ilamas that are doing well now.

grass clippings? on top of soil? to increase humidity?

Adam, I roughly followed Har's advice from the club meeting a while back. I had a half inch of sterilized soil on the bottom of the bin, the seeds were laying on top of the soil and I covered them with sterilized straw. Despite soaking the seeds in full strength hydrogen peroxide twice, the first time 15 minutes the second time overnight, a blue cheese like mold covered the shell. The bins are sitting on top of a water heater for bottom heat.

I collected these from two different sources down south. They are Guillermo.

Seedling ilamas do not come true to the parent tree.

It is interesting to know the ancestry of your seedlings, but your seedlings are not 'Guillermo'.

Thanks Har, I was referring to the mother tree. The Guillermo is in the vicinity of a few other annonas so I wouldn't be surprised to see some cross pollination also.

I am a new member. I am getting a few Ilama seeds in a few days. I would be very thankful if some body will tell how to germinate them. Has any tried using GA-3? Chandramohan

You can see from my rotted mess that I am the wrong person to speak up. The few that did come up were sheer chance. Even though I sterilized the seeds in peroxide and bleach multiple times they still rotted. I also sterilized the soil in the bottom of the container and the hay used to cover them. The container too was sterilized. I have no idea why they still choose to rot.

Congratulation Bob that had got to be the worst chinese stirfry noodle left over tupperware in your frigerator, you sure that aint some beansprout that sprung to life & not ilama?😜  I like the Redneck Hightech seedling tray!👍
remember you ask me what I got sprouting in the pot with Baccurea tampoi; its the orange Soncoya from Venezuela; not the Ilama.  Soil is Italian shit meatball with calcium carbonate & worm compost; took six months to get here from Caracas for God sake!  Now how the hell are you going to haul that Chinese Takeout on the plane?😃✈️

Bob, you probably planted the seeds fresh.  They actually benefit from 6-10 months dry storage at room temperature.

Jack, I thought they were soncoyas. The seed husks are pretty unique. I will be finding a way for only a few select trees to make the treck to Bieke. Unfortunately, I have to start many things all over again and I have to give up the pawpaw growing trials. I have had to give away so many plants! Adam inherited the pawpaws I'm sure they have a good home.

Har, I got the seeds in mid September and germinated them mid October. You can see the date on the container in the first pic. I was weighing the different batches of seed to see how much moisture they were losing and they were losing it quickly despite being stored in a plastic bag at room temperature. I spread the seeds around the globe to others and they had better germination rates than me. I still have another batch that I am going to wait the full term before planting even though the occasional seed that I open every month from the batch seems dried out at this point. I don't have high hopes for the recent one that came up as it has a very small root system. The others that had small root systems slowly died despite my efforts.

Adam, I am all out of chopsticks. Pa carajo!
