« on: December 30, 2021, 05:42:00 PM »

Typical rainfall for my weather station is 33.64 inches.

"2020" rainfall beginning Sep 1 2020, ending Aug 31 2021 was sparse at just 16". We have already had 23.27" inches this year since August 31, 2021 till today so we are in awesome shape for next year. We also have nearly 20 feet of snow in the Sierras. This is not drought ending yet, but certainly takes the heat off in a major way for the majority of California.

I sincerely hope we get double what we've had already, and there is a great chance that happens this year. We tend to get the most in February.

Concur about February being usually the most rainy month.  I remember it being super wet until recently (past 20 years). I think it used to push into the 20+" range back in the 80s here , really wasn't pleasant walking to the parking lot after class. Same hopes for a lot more rain too... just spread out enough so it soakes in vs runoff.. and at nighttime  :)  (Laguna Lake is Laguna Swamp right now, good thing they did some dredging this year)

!,404 mm. for 2021 (average is 1200}  197mm for Dec. (average is 130 )
We are 60kms in a direct line from the sea , and due west of Mourilyan, near Innisfail.   Innisfail's average is 3.550 mm. We are at 915 metres (about 3,000 feet) altitude,
you can start to seee the range of microclimates there are in a relatively short distance.  About 5 kms due east of us the rainforest starts, and it was once all
rainforest from there to the sea. We live in a block of tall wet sclerophyll forest (sclerophyll means 'hard leaves') and the forest trees are almost all myrtaceous
species ( Eucalyptus, Angophora, Lophostemon)(plus Allocasuarina ) . Sorry, back to the climate. To giive you an idea of the range of microclimates here, just 4kms east of us the winter -spring rainfall is too high to grow mangos succesfully, yet we have plenty of mangos every year, with no spraying.
One intersting climate-related fact :  Two days ago,we had a wet,cloudy day. (95mm ). The minimum temperature was 18 C, the maximum was 21 C.
That's in the middle of summer here.  Then I read that somewhere in Alaska on that day, in the middle of winter there, had a record maximum of 19.4 C.

In the ten years I've lived on the CA Central Coast I don't think I can recall any rain past April, just the odd and very random squall - summer monsoon kind of thing. I am blessed with the 2200' of elevation where I'm at as the clouds get stuck up here and just hammer down. I wish it were more consistent... My landlord who lived here for 60 years (RIP in 2020 at 88 yrs old) said that it used to rain every single week even during summer, often 4-5 days at a time, back in the day. Our well at a lowly 110' has been producing the same 3gph for over 40 years - I think we get enough rain to re-charge it annually.

So, the year before was very dry for our climate coming in at 85”.
This last year almost doubled that amount with 160”
The drier year was much better for fruit production while more rain has favored planting and tree development. We have a pattern of two wet seasons and two dry so the yearly rainfall is fairly uniform in our corner of Costa Rica.

In my farm, I got 4872 mm or about 190 inches. There was'nt even one month without some rain. Due to lack of sunshine, my plants are suffering.

While we get a lot of rain we also get plenty of sun. It’s not unusual to get a good rainfall at night and then have a sunny day. That’s the pattern we like but it can reverse easily enough. In rainy years our plants don’t suffer, they tend to grow well. What can suffer is fruit production on certain trees like durian and mangosteen. Where I see plants suffer is in parts of CR that get a long dry season.

Searches suggest we get around 40 - 65 inches of rain per year in my area, but I have doubts about the totals. It can rain like crazy here, and be dry 1/2 mile away.

Is there a good electronic rain gauge/weather station that anyone would recommend? Want something that will generate totals for the month and year, not just daily. Would really like to know the true numbers for our yard.

I have been using "Ambient Weather WS-2902C WiFi Smart Weather Station" since March 2021.  It is fairly easy to install and has been very reliable for me. It gives you daily, monthly and yearly rainfall along with other weather related data. You can access information online thru their website.  You can also add it to Weather underground and access your home weather information thru Weather underground website.

In my immediate area believe it or not we had nearly 8-9ft of rain. Last time that happened  here was like 25 years ago. The back third of my land was solid water for 3 or better months straight. Killed a huge long standing chickasaw plum in the yard that I had grafted many improved varieties onto earlier that season...go figure. I was successful to on like 85% of the grafts.
Trying to grow it all!
