Usually a smudge pot has a large round base with a chimney coming out of the middle of the base. The smudge pot is placed between trees in an orchard. The burning oil creates heat, smoke, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. It was believed that this oil burning heater would help keep the orchard from cooling too much during the cold snaps.

Seanny, thank you for the info. Yes, I definitely will use it for mango and other fruit trees' potting mix. Rice hull also contains Lignin which helps balance the ph of soil and turns into Humic substances when mixed with soil. I do not plan on removing perlite from my soil mix, I will use both because they both offer different benefits.

« on: December 06, 2018, 11:49:09 AM »I’m curious what your looking to use this medium for?Thank you for your message! For soil mix and as a cheaper replacement for Perlite. A study at Purdue University shows that rice hulls may work as well or better than peat and perlite in some finished crops.

Thank you. I still have not found it for sale locally. I called Diamond-R and two feed stores and no one carries it or is willing to special order it. Some places didn't even know what rice hulls was.
