MangoFang's Yard Update March 2012

So gang...here's my Palm Springs update.  Funny - even with our very warm January and pretty mild February, things are flowering
at about, or even perhaps a bit later, than they did compared to last year's "normal" winter.  Looks like that extra cold mike actually force blooming a little earlier. (just as the experts say!)

First up - My one year old Keitt plant - so far the most amazingly complex flavored mango:



Edward - in full flower - hope to get something from this shy bearer this year



And my new Kent, really sending out the blossoms:



This is Glenn - I discoverd the watering line had shifted to a dribble, so that's why it looks a bit dry.  Anyone with artificial
watering systems - don't ever assume they are operating normally - got to check on them every so often...



Mahachanok - looking good and stiff!



This is what I know call "Backyard Manny" - my manila, the second one I got, that's been moved around a bit and finally settled in to this spot, now awaiting grafts to really spice her up!  She's tall and lean, but with some sprouts near the ground - all great grafting points for the future



Rosigold - into her 4th year, with only one delightful fruit to show for it - every tree has a personality to go along with it's reputation doesn't it?

A nice tropical paradise you have there, Fang of Mango.

Your pictures made me notice that not all panicles look the same. The stems of Pickering are a nice deep reddish color. The stems of my Mallika are green. Dot and Graham panicle stems are a lighter pink, kind of blotchy.

I would love to this your mango yard in 5-10 more years... would be amazing when the canopies start to spread over the back yard. Would then need a google earth view to see everything . Btw, what is the plant behind the Glenn mango, it looks kind of like Kangkong (Ipomoea aquatica).

MangoDog, when are we going to start the mango pipeline from Palm Springs to La Habra? I think you are going to reach the century mark this year so you can send some my way this summer! The way you are going you are going to put the mango ranch in the Coachella Valley out of business, congrats!

I don't think that's water spinach, its leaves grow directly from the fat hollow stalks, unlike in the picture it seems to be a very thin stem.  Real water spinach leaves aren't glossy like shown in the picture either, so glossy and uniform - it looks fake

I was thinking either that too, its a good looking fake. Some Taro in its place would make a great replacement . Or maybe some Lotus flowers.

Pugles - gosh, now where did I get the Pickering - was it Pine Island?  I think so....

DanMan - you know I haven't looked closely to see the difference in color, but I will now!  And would like
                to find some that are fragrant, or so I've heard...

Nullsie and Timbo - that IS a fake plant!  Sort of a bambooish thing - to cover some pipes and a block
                wall related to the pond operation.

JF - will I get a hundred mangos....hmmmm.....I'm thinking not quite, but maybe.  Manny (in front) will   
      probably hit in the 70's, and the rest will be a "show me what ya got" event....

....and here's the rest of the trees.......



Alphonso is just a tiger - LOVES its location - Lordy I hope I get to taste some Indian mango this year!



Old Manny - from the roof - can't see them but a bunch of 1" inflos kicking out...



The 3-n-1:  Nam Doc Mai, Haden and Valencia Pride.  Tough to see but the Haden has a couple inflos and the VP as well - the NDM is going to be later, for sure...



And finally an All-n-One Almond (don't know what species that would  be) but for the first year I got a bunch of flowers and you can see some almonds forming if you look closely(on the right upper side).....That Almond is a beautiful tree - look at the smooth bark - that trunk is going to be awsome...

I am surprised to see the Mamey Sapote, and the almond. Worthy of a spot in place of a mango . No pomegranates?, you have the perfect climate for them!

Nm, I confused when you said Old Manny (its a mango variety I have not heard of, I took a quick glance at the picture). Thought you were referring to Mamey Sapote.

I offered him a beautiful 5' maganga mamey sapote for free last year and he said he had no room..

It was in a 24" box and I gave it away to my friend in Ontario.....I think it is still alive.
