How do I know when a Pickering is ready for picking? I can't seem to embed a picture for some reason but here's a link to a picture...

From a previous thread, seems like the color should be golden yellow before picking?

Let it color up a bit or it will be bland. Like any new fruit to you, you'll just have to try one or two to get the hang of it. Green avocados especially.

Rob says: Color should be golden yellow. Then it needs to sit and ripen. Must be fully max ripe, even with some black spotting, to have sweetness and proper flavor. Eat it before its time, its pretty blah/bland.
Also, I find that when fully ripe, you just move the fruit slightly and it falls into your hand.

The shoulders need to get colorful and red to reddish with color dripping downward in lines. Only mango I have seen with color dripping

I've never actually harvested a Pickering, however, they are good when you let them get a little wrinkly on the table.

Man, SO jealous!! My mangoes are barely golf size and you guys are eating tree ripened mangoes...mine are all from the grocery store this early in the season...Happy for you guys though... Enjoy. But I know you are ;D

Report from home, mother tells me our little Pickering is loaded, but they are still probably a month away.

Sometimes the yellow color can be from sunburn and not ripening. Use the squeeze test. Squeeze an unripe fruit, it will be hard as a rock. As the fruit ripens, the fruit will give a little when squeezed. Pick the mango when it has a bit of give when squeezed. Put it on the kitchen counter to ripen. Experiment on eating several pickering mangos at different stages of ripeness. When underripe, it will have a substandard taste. When perfectly ripe, the pickering will have a creamy texture. When overripe; it will have a pungent taste.

Do these look ok to pick from the tree now and let them fully color up in the kitchen? We have a few squirrels around (and random gardeners) and I'd hate to lose one of the 3 mango's I have from my Pickering.

Mine look about like that when they're ripe. But be forewarned. The sugar content is low this year, due to all the rain.

I'd give it a few more days to get rid of some of the remaining green.. when they look like that ..3-5 days should be enough to turn it fully yellow ..
and as said above, they should take literally no effort to pick when ripe ..the slightest move of the fruit's stem should make it come off in your hand when ripe.
Of course if the squirrels are eyeing it up (luckily I don't have any in my subdivision) you can pick it now and it should still ripen up well after a few days (based on the pics).

It's true what Jani says. When they are fully ripe and ready, the slightest movement will cause them to detach.

Yep, and the nose test. They should go from having no smell to having a very tropical fruity aroma.
