Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lavender Mulberry

hybrid mulberry i found at my uncle and aunts place on the river bank today.



Thought it may be of interest to some of you, never seen nothing like it before. Uncle has a white at his house and the wild black ones grow feral everywhere down the river. Tasted awesome.

Quite a surprise this morning as i was having my coffee and doing my saturday morning walk around my trees i noticed shoots i have been watching for a while where just shoots but with a little white surprise in amongst some of them. a few lonely flower buds. sorry for condition of plant, not looking the greatest but i cant stop these little grubs that keep chewing the tips out of new shoots. plants are around 3.5 yrs old.

E. Sulcata
E. Punicifolia
E. Cereja
E. Klotzschiana or any other interesting eugenias including wild types or commonly planted types. Any help in my quest for new eugenias will be greatly appreciated.

Pitomba fruiting coming into winter. fruits are massive comparedto my other pitomba.



Yellow jabo flowering at just over a foot tall.



Pitangatuba flowering under three yrs old. looks like the curly leaf one is setting fruit but the other is dropping the buds after pollination.

Have a yellow jabo that is about a foot and a tad tall and it has flowers coming on one of the branches. Currently a week or so away from winter, plants are workin in reverse here gettin ready for flowerin in winter. How big do yellow jabs normally get before flowering?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / cold snappin pitangatubas!

Have a couple of pitangatubas around 2.5 yrs old and a foot and half tall. Over the last couple of months they have been poking out flowers here and there 1 or two at a time but have had a bit of a drop in night time temps and you can really feel the winter chill comin in the air and it has really done something to the pitangatubas as they are starting to flower like crazy. I counted over 50 flowers one one tree! Have a pitomba ( e. luschnathiana) even fruiting? Other pitomba finished its fruiting in January and is shutting down for winter but this other tree I have is just starting to kick on.
Anybody else find chill triggers their pitangatubas into flowers or just coincidence? Love to hear from anyone else growing them in Australia.

Eugenia candolleana first fruits. Tried first one today and it was absolutely delicious, only about half inch diam but was sweet and tasted like a really good red grape. Now I just gotta get rid of these bloody bugs that keep stinging all the fruit. Little blighters sit on the flower end of the fruit and stick their mouth piece into fruit and suck half of it dry. Tree is about 2.5' tall.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / northern blueberries.

Just found an article on blueberries being grown comercially in Bundaberg Queensland and they harvested 1.5kilos per bush for first year harvest. Not too up on blueberry harvests or anything like that but it is fairly north of where most blueberries are grown on the east coast of australia. Apparently it is a variety commonly used in Spain. Anybody have any idea what variety it may be?

Started off growing trees and hating spiders which is going against a healthy gardening perspective but as my collection grew it turned into a small ecosystem. I started to find insects that were eating my plants and as I kept an eye on them the non beneficials started to get a real foot hold. I bought poison to spray them with but I started noticing an ever growing population of colourful jumping spiders that every time I saw them they had a bug in there gobs so I couldn't bring myself to spray insecticides so I would go around and smite any unwanteds I could find and hoped my new pals would take care of the rest. Today I found some awkward bugs that I have been observing to see if they are friend or foe, found out they are assasin bugs! I saw one this morning and he had a tiny fruit fly attached to the end of his face and was happily munching on it then i noticed another with a mealy bug in its mouth so they are going to be a permanent in my garden i hope.
I also noticed a European wasp which normally get the heat treatment when found flying out of the plants with a flatid leafhopper in its jaws so I will rethink the need to get rid of them. Other beneficial bugs I have found at the odd lacewings, lady beetles and one of my favorites the praying mantis!
Interested to hear of others observations in the garden in Australia especially but also world wide.

Back from a week off to find flowers on my pitangatuba and some small fruits on my candolleana. Pitangatuba I am pretty sure is just under two years old. 6 flowers in total and plant is about a foot tall.

Got some dysentrica seeds which germinated well and truly in transit and wondering does this species grow like a rhizhome under the ground? Instead of coming out as a root and a shoot it is like runners with nodules that have shoots coming out of them. It looks like the nodules on a legume. Is that normal?

Well this afternoon I decided to finally pull my boat out of the corner of the yard where it has sat for about 18months collecting dirt and leaves and set about rewiring the trailer before starting the cleanout. After the wiring I got to hosing out the hull and applying the new rego stickers when I heard my cousin shout out to me... Is your daughter meant to be cutting that tree? I ran around the other side of the boat to find my 2 and a half year old daughter with the sidecutters in her hands and a small swathe of destruction taken out on my tropical fruit trees. Trees that took the brunt were my psidium guineense, Eugenia candolleana, Eugenia pyriformis, Eugenia luschnathiana and a handful of nice big unifloras. She was just about to take the missus big brown turkey fig on when the cousin noticed what was going on. My own fault as I shouldn't have left the cutters laying around but I also didn't mind too much as at least she is taking an interest in gardening! Haha. Better than dolls.

Hi all, just scoutin around my plants this morning and I looked at the new growth on my Florida seedlings and I had to sit and scratch my head for a while... I think the bugger is flowering! I only received seeds of this one last October and I had a hard time germinating them in the pot of dirt(my fault) and these were the first seeds I tested germinating in a zip lock bag after I dug them up at Christmas to find a few had rotted. The first one that came out of the bag with a small root I planted and it really shot off compared to the couple that followed. This first plant is now about a foot tall and was punching out new buds at the base of each leaf so I was nipping out most of them and only left a few near the top to try and leave the trunk bare. On closer look at the shoots today there looks to be flower buds between the bud and trunk of the plant. This plant is well under the year old mark and seeds were from Miguel. Sorry but I cant post photos but if somebody wants I could send some to them to post.

Just scouting around the Bundaberg area this weekend and came across about 20 mature Eugenia reinwardtiana bushes that had some fruit on them. Havnt got this one in my collection yet as I wanted to find some wild ones to try fruit on first. Fruit didn't taste too bad for plants growing in straight sand not 30 metres from the beach. Got about twenty fruit from about5 trees. Trees were about 1.5 m high and 3 m wide. In trouble with missus as apparently suppose to be a weekend away from the fruit trees. Haha

Haha can finally post photos! Has been doing my head in with the old phone but now she all good. Just a test post to make sure it all works. Went out for a bushealk a couple of weeks ago and stumbled upon 3 wild fingerlime trees, just a couple of random photos. One of the trees had very attractive large leaves and the fruit were dramatically larger than the ripe fruit from the other two trees. Smaller ones had a nice mild lemon flavour. Two small leaved small fruit trees were about 4 metres tall and the large leaf was about 1.9metres tall. Hope the photos turn out. Don
