germinating eugenias
« on: August 12, 2014, 07:19:30 AM »
Got my first lot of seeds today of involucrata and pyriformis and wondering what depth and what medium I should use for planting them? Any help will be much appreciated.

They are fairly easy; cover the seeds with 1 cm  topsoil - they are not too picky so any soil mix with good drainage will generally do. You can also germinate them using the zip lock bag method.

I would suggest a well mix that drains well, perlite and peat moss should work. :)

It's amazing the difference in germinating time in Eugenias , some are fast ( 1 month ) others 3 to 4 .

Can use coffee filters, vermiculite, peat moss etc. Works well; especially the coffee filter for small seeds.

Very interesting method soren will have to try it next lot. Luc, how long do pyriformis and involucrata take to germinate? I ended up potting in sieved potting mix so its nice and fine and potting in some orchid pots so there is lots of air and drainage and placed in my mini hothouse to start them off. Does this seem okay?

I noticed that Eugenias are not really demanding about soil , I have a rare fruit nursery so I use what's available , agregata/involucrata takes about one month , don't remember how long for pyriformis I'd say the same or a little longer . Not like stipitata and observa that take 3 to 4 months....
