Costa Rica seeds ID
« on: August 21, 2014, 12:57:06 AM »
My friend brought back some seeds from Costa Rica and couldn't remember what they were from. Any ideas on the three? They were from fruit that she ate.

The seed on the left and in the middle looks like Spondias mombin.

Yes, it looks like a mombin seed, one of my favorite fruits and trees. Called jocote in CR, they are very popular and in season right now, widely sold in markets and on the streets. The fruits are only about three or four centimeters long. Not much to eat considering such a large seed. You can find the seeds all along the CR roadsides where Ticos have chewed the soft sweet creamy flesh off and then spit the large seeds out. The trees are very fast growing and are grown from large limb cuttings, often planted as fence posts where they then grow into large trees in long rows.

I think the seed on the right might be from a guanabana fruit.

Thanks for the help. The one on the right is too round and full to be a guanabana, since I did get some guanabanas also.

I've been looking at that seed on the right.  Maybe it is pejibaye, bactris gasipaes.
The spondias seed could be either s. mombin, jobo, or s. purpurea, jocote.  Jocote doesn't usually germinate from seed it seems.

I just ate a pejibaye fruit and looked at the seed. You're right, Peter. That black seed is a pejibaye seed.
