first eugenia involucrata flowers
« on: October 09, 2016, 12:11:09 AM »
Hi, at Argentina, we call it cerella, not cereja do rio grande... I have 3 trees, just 1 planted at my garden and the others went to the food forest (where they got -6º C on winter) and to the weekend house of my parents. They are maybe 3 years old now, and one of them at the food forest fruited (1 fruit) last yeat, but I didnt tasted it.

To me, the flowers remember more a psidium guajava than an eugenia, the perfume is nice, and I didnt saw the flower buds because they seem to be leaves.

Thanks folks: I even tought about hand pollinate them as eugenias seem to set more fruits if there are 2 bushes near. I am fertilizing every tree at my garden, so maybe I will be receiving more good news soon.

This involucrata has an uvaia near, and some unifloras, reindwartiana, brasilensis and repanda.. it would be fun to cross them...

Marcos, Involucrata has to much genetic variation, what makes that a fruit from tree "A" can be totally different from the fruit of the tree "B". The shape can be rounded or oval, the color intense-red or dark-red, almost black. The size can vary from 2 to 4 cm, but the flavor is the worst... can be very sweet, acid, or just taste like water!!

I hope that you have at least one good cultivar between those trees. :)

Also, in my experience, I figured the flavor changes quickly after you harvest them.

Yes, given enough space they are very vigorous. I have got a orange Involucrata that is nudging three feet at a tad over 1 year old. I have kept minimum of three trees of each to hopefully get something tasting good.

I've always longed  for having an E. Involucrata fruiting in my garden, maybe because i'm italian and here in the philipppines i miss the black and wonderful "vignola mora"  cherry of my hometown.
Nevertheless, after reading your considerations i'm a little bit discouraged  :-\
This will be just a sweet memory.....

Dont let peoples opinions discourage you, if they were that awful nobody would be growing them. Cant hurt to try them.

Congratulations!

I'm looking forward to the taste report and to see the size and shape of your cherries. And to Don's taste report as well  ;D
I have one that is 4 years old, but very bushy and small, still only 50 cm high. It never flowered or fruited so far, but I have pretty long and bleak winters here.
