Tropical Fruit Discussion / Brix testing - help!
« on: September 27, 2025, 12:56:46 PM »
To test the brix, should I juice the fruit with a juicer?  I have an omega juicer.  Or should I just mash up the fruit with the fiber and test the mash?

How do I test fruits with no juice like ross sapote, mamey, etc? (at least it would be very hard to extract the juice with a juicer)

My daughter is doing brix testing for her science project.  Appreciate any help!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / will people steal starfruit?
« on: August 25, 2025, 05:43:23 PM »
I just got a Kary starfruit and I'm deciding where to plant it.  I have one spot right next to the road in the easement.  Will people steal starfruit or are few interested in it?  I guess if I have a bounty and a passerby takes one fruit it's not a big deal, I'm more worried about the people who take all your fruit to sell.  Of these trees which would be the best to plant right by the road:
- Kary starfruit
- younghans white sapote
- cochin jackfruit

this is also a smaller spot, maybe cochin jackfruit would be better since it's a dwarf tree?  Kary starfruit I can buy locally as well, cochin jackfruit I cannot, so I'm leaning towards putting the jackfruit in the back since it's more precious

I bought some of this for my mangoes but should i also apply it to the other tropical fruit trees in my yard?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soft jackfruit variety reaction!
« on: June 02, 2025, 10:39:09 PM »
Finally, my soft jackfruit seedling produced one fruit.  Here is my post from 2021 on this tree:
https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=43428.0

This seed comes from fruit I bought.  The jackfruit was the most amazing fruit I've ever tasted.  The flavor is intense juicy fruit gum.  You can just pull off the peel, no knife needed, minimal latex.  The texture is soft but no fiber that makes you choke.

I no longer have access to the mother tree and never will again.  I am so glad I planted a seed.  There's another amazing crunchy jackfruit on this same property which the one seed I planted died and now it's lost to me forever.  In fact, I've also got an amazing avocado from a school my daughter used to go to, one teacher gave it to me.  I never planted the seed because back then seedling trees were always talked about as inferior and that a grafted tree is the only way to go.  I believed that the best varieties were the ones for sale in nurseries.  I was sure I would discover the variety name soon--but I never did.  The avocado was shaped exactly like a huge florida avocado but the huge amount of flesh inside was like a hass avocado (even better) - creamy, nutty, etc.  The lesson is PLANT THE SEED unless for sure you are trying a named variety from a newer planted grove.  There are many old unknown trees in groves here that are not sold in the nursery trade but have fruit way better than available named varieties.

As I always do, I went outside to feel every fruit I have ripening to see if any are softening.  The one jackfruit on my seedling tree was soft for the first time today after some rain.  I picked it and brought it inside and opened it.  It was easy and fun to peel open just like the mother tree.  Unfortunately I opened the fruit too soon-should have let it ripen on the counter a little longer - BUT the tips of the pods were ripe enough for me to tell-it's exactly as good as the mother tree!  The fruit is amazing.  Never thought I would taste this fruit again.  I was expecting the disappointment knowing that I planted the tree 4 years ago and waited for 4 years the fruit doesn't live up, but NO-JACKFRUIT IS TRUE TO SEED! The flavor was very intense juicyfruit gum, juicy, no latex, no fiber, some pods even had tiny seeds.

Will post some pictures soon!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mini jackfruit variety?
« on: May 25, 2025, 09:33:50 PM »
My friend is leaving the country soon for a while and she gave me this mini jackfruit, it was picked about a month early since she is leaving. Anyway she got it from another person she knows. The fruit has a good flavor and texture and is tiny compared to most jackfruit i encounter but was full of pods.  Does this look like a known variety? I will plant the seeds.. i’ve lost another amazing jackfruit and an avocado that are better than known varieties because at the time I didn’t plant the seeds and now have no access to the trees- won’t let that happen again

I purchased this Pakistani purple tree from Lara Farms:
https://larafarmsmiami.com/products/mulberry

Would this be the same as the Pakistani black?  I'm looking for the darkest, sweetest fruit, looking something like this:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White sapote cultivar reviews
« on: May 18, 2025, 05:27:26 PM »
Starting a thread to post reviews of white sapote cultivars for the benefit of the community. I tried the redlands white sapote from Lara Farms. The fruit ripened quickly so i think it was definitely picked ripe. I also will post a review for some other cultivars soon. My experience on the flavor is that it is soft, sweet, and has a combination of a lemony and herbal tastes. It’s good.it’s refreshing and leaves a good aftertaste in your mouth for awhile. I think one to two trees would be enough, especially with the potential to graft multiple varieties onto one tree. Others have said 2+ trees is best for pollination. For me i plan to have a tree in the future but i think Paul from fruitful trees having his whole yard be white Sapote wouldn’t be the path i take, taste is very subjective.I appreciate every fruit in its season but i like to have a variety of trees. Even on large fruit there isn't enough meat to slice it out, so freezing the pulp will be a slow process. That’s why i’m thinking 1 multigrafted or 2 trees is ideal.

I would like to put a cover over the old wooden fence that separates my yard from my neighbors.  There are a lot of holes in the fence and a big gap at the bottom.  I've read that the color of johnb51 and Coconut Cream's house was affecting their trees--sometimes in a good or bad way.  What color should I pick (black, blue, or gray - I could also get red if I get heavy duty and not super heavy duty) to not affect my trees at all?  I know some colors can cause them to overheat or other problems?

This is the product I'm looking at:

Thank you for your help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Not successful in growing mangoes?
« on: April 25, 2025, 02:47:13 PM »

Good afternoon everyone,
I may do the consulting that Alex offers in the future, but for now just wanted to see if anyone has any advice.  My mango trees all start out OK but then start getting many dead branches, get infected with two types of fungus (the big black spots and the tiny dots in the pictures) that only impacts mangoes, and then languish and stop producing fruit.  Does anyone know what is causing these problems?  I only use mulch and don't do anything else--I could start fertilizing, watering or pruning them, but don't really have an idea what is wrong or what I need to do to fix the situation.

When planning where to put trees, is it more important to think of pollination (planting two varieties of the same type of tree next to each other) OR keeping jackfruit and white sapote trees out of the rows around the house?  How far apart can trees be for pollination?  Is 8 feet from the house OK for jackfruit and white sapote?

I have one spot available next to red custard apple with low production.  I was planning to plant a second annona reticulata variety in this spot for pollination.  However, this spot is far from the house, and would be ideal for the jackfruit and white sapote I want to plant.  Custard apple does not have invasive roots so it would be fine next to the house.  If I plant the second custard apple still in the backyard but not next to the existing tree, would it be close enough for pollination?  What should be the priority-planting the custard apple trees next to each other or planting jackfruit and white sapote far from the house?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Swimming pool container for fruit trees
« on: January 10, 2025, 11:05:30 AM »
Hi All, I have a swimming pool at my house that I’m interested in converting to more planting area. There are three options for pool demolition:
(1) break up the bottom and fill with soil
(2) partial pool demolition-break up the bottom and sides 2 ft down and remove the surrounding patio
(3) full pool demolition-remove entire pool and all the concrete

I’m thinking of going with option (1) because I'm very concerned about the amount of concrete dust that will be generated and concerned about damage to my existing trees. I have multiple trees planted near the pool patio.

Here are my questions. For a swimming pool with bottom broken up and no other concrete removed (option 1):

Would trees grow OK inside the swimming pool? Would they get root bound? Would they thrive long term or only for a certain number of years? How many trees could i plant inside? Would the pool container be hot and dry inside like regular containers, or no problems like this because it’s in ground? Would only certain types of trees be ok inside the pool (ex: mango but not jackfruit, etc)? Will the concrete dust from the demolition (hopefully not that much if it’s only the bottom being broken up) affect the trees that I already have (getting on leaves, flowers, etc) and should i take steps to protect them?

If anyone has any experience with this or advice please let me know. I will attach a google image of my yard.  Unfortunately my yard is big but the prior owner filled it with concrete. You can also private message me if you have any advice.

I have 7-8 cocos that I've planted that are now starting to fruit.  I can have my lawn guy open coconuts for free with a machete but he only comes every other week.  It would be nice to be able to open coconuts on my own to drink every day and use the meat in recipes/smoothies.  I've looked for machines like this in the past and nothing like this has ever become available to US buyers.

Would lead paint or other chemicals in the machine be a concern if it's coming from India?  Do I need to worry about some plant virus or pest coming over with the package?

Or should I try to learn to use a machete myself?  I'm small and out of shape so not sure if it's possible, also I don't want to take risks of hurting myself.

I just don't want a chlorine swimming pool anymore (it came with the house I live in).  I have many fruit trees planted close and all around the pool.  Would like to get rid of the pool but would it be possible to do without damaging all the nearby trees?  The other option is to convert it to a natural swimming pool but I don't know much about these.

I had some mulch delivered to my house and a very heavy truck drove very close to a young coconut palm I have.  What are the chances the tree will be OK? :(

Will post a picture soon if the site lets me.

Is anyone seeing a lot of (or more than in the past) water accumulation in your neighborhood?  My street never had this issue before, I specifically bought a house that wasn't in a flood zone, but this rainy season is different.  Huge puddles are flooding the streets.  It seems like climate change is here.  Also the cold weather today is strange for this time of year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Butterscotch sapodilla questions
« on: May 11, 2023, 09:43:04 AM »
I have a Haysa sapodilla and want to get a second sapodilla as a pollinator.

When does Butterscotch flower - would it be flowering at the same time as Haysa?

When does Butterscotch have it's fruit maturing?

For those who have Butterscotch sapodilla - how does it taste compared to Haysa?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango weed wacker damage
« on: April 27, 2023, 09:12:18 PM »
I'm devastated right now...I've lost about 10 mangoes to weed wacker damage from my lawn guy.  I feel so sad.  Some mangoes are still attached but have deep marks on them from the weed wacker.  Should I remove these mangoes or will they be able to recover?

I'm going to spend all my free time this weekend putting down cardboard and clearing around trees  :'(  :'(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pressure cleaning & fruit trees
« on: April 25, 2023, 10:10:10 AM »
I am planning to have someone come to do some pressure cleaning on my back patio (and pressure cleaning the sides of the house).  I have a lot of fruit trees nearby.  I'm going to make sure they don't use anything other than water in the pressure cleaning and don't touch the trees with the pressure cleaner.  Is this generally OK or should I not do pressure cleaning?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana rope for ripening a rack of bananas
« on: April 05, 2023, 09:50:58 AM »
I have 3 large namwah banana bunches that will be taken down soon.  How do I set up the rope holder for bananas so that I can ripen the entire bunch outside and take bananas off as they ripen without them getting damaged?  Any tips on setting this up will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

There are many books about gardening but a lot of them relate to gardening in areas with frost.  Are there any good books about gardening, homesteading or farming in tropical areas or south florida?

Paul Nison posted a video awhile back about growing watermelon during the South FL summer.  He mentioned georgia rattlesnake as the variety in the comments.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  What month should I plant the seeds?  What varieties have you grown?

Share your ideas on what vegetables to plant over the summer that actually taste good & are productive.

Basil - all types.  Thai, Genovese are what I've tried.  I'm going to try lettuce leaf basil & red basil this summer.
Lemongrass
Mint
Pepper - Habanada & Cubanelle
Eggplant - ping tung long (does not set fruit in hottest part of summer but plant survives & produces after/before the ends of the regular growing season).  Tempted to try thai frog egg & chinese string from Baker Creek.
Green Papaya
Okra - tried it before and didn't like the taste/texture, but will try again this year with new recipes
Garlic Chives
Bottle Gourd - tried it last year and it only set one fruit.  Anyone know where to get seed that can produce better in the heat?
