Cold Hardy Citrus / Bifoliate Arcobal seedling
« on: August 05, 2025, 07:28:03 PM »
Hi everyone,

I made an interesting discovery today: one of my seed-grown Arcobal orange seedlings has produced a bifoliate leaf. It’s the first time I’ve seen this on this plant, and I don’t recall any of the other seedlings showing bifoliate leaves. Does this suggest the seedling might be a hybrid (perhaps pollinated by a parent with Poncirus genetics) or can bifoliate foliage simply appear on its own from time to time?

The person who gave me the seeds also grows US-119, so that may be the most likely pollen parent.

I’d love to hear what you think!

Best,
Alexandre

Citrus General Discussion / Bergyuzu (Bergamot x Yuzu)
« on: June 25, 2025, 12:02:00 PM »
Hi everyone,

I’m thrilled to share a few seedlings from my very first citrus cross, and it happens to be one I’ve been dreaming about for years!

At the end of last November, I pollinated castrated flowers of my bergamot tree using Yuzu pollen. Only one fruit set in early December, and I honestly wasn’t expecting much.

Fast forward to early summer: unfortunately, my bergamot tree began suffering from root rot, so I had to remove all the fruit. To my surprise, and with a bit of luck, that lone fruit was packed with seeds (a rare find in bergamot, in my experience).

Now, I have several Bergyuzu seedlings growing, and some are already starting to push their first true leaves. My hope is to eventually select seedlings with the most promising aromatic traits (ideally suited for perfume or fine cuisine) and graft 5–6 of the best onto rootstock later this summer.

Curious to hear your thoughts and observations.

All the best,
Alexandre

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Wanted: Australian Red Lime
« on: January 28, 2025, 09:50:07 AM »
Hi all,

I'm in Canada, but would anyone here be kind enough to send me some budwood of the Australian red lime? Can't find it anywhere here. I would pay for shipping.

Many thanks.  ;D

Hi all,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

A few days ago, I came across a listing on Facebook Marketplace from an older woman selling her 45-year-old grapefruit tree, which she had grown from seed. The tree has been cultivated entirely indoors and received minimal fertilizer over the years, which might explain why it has never flowered. My mother purchased it for $65, and we’re excited to give it some care in hopes of encouraging it to flower and bear fruit.

I haven’t seen the tree in person yet, but my mother mentioned that it has a VERY pleasant fragrance. The leaves have a lemony and “fruit-loopy” scent, which is unusual for grapefruit leaves. While the leaf shape resembles that of a grapefruit tree, it might actually be a grapefruit x (Meyer?) lemon hybrid. We’re hoping to uncover its true identity this spring.

Here’s our plan for early spring:

-Light and hard pruning to restore its shape.
-Repotting it in a 5-1-1 mix and a new terracotta pot.
-Fertilizing it.
-If it still doesn’t flower, allowing the soil to dry out to induce stress.

Do you have any other suggestions for encouraging it to bloom this spring?[/li][/list]

I’ve attached a few pictures of the tree and its leaves for reference.

Best regards,
Alex

Citrus General Discussion / Amalfitan Rangpur?
« on: July 05, 2024, 07:48:15 PM »
Back in February when I found my first small Amalfi lemon at the specialty market,  I also got my hands on a beautiful Citron from Amalfi (variety unknown, but let me know if you know it). The scent was magnificent, close to Amalfi lemons.

Anyway, fast forward to now, I grew some of its seeds. They are quite slow growers compared to the small Amalfi lemons, and the big Sfusato Amalfitano I grew (see updates in my other posts). The seedling also has a weird way of growing where a bunch of buds grew in packs on the tip after the first two leaves appeared, but they stagnated for a couple of months.

After the real pair of leaves grew, I discovered that this Citron was possibly cross-pollinated by a Mandarin (see the leaves' shape of the seedlings). Two of them have very similar leaves' shape to Mandarin. I crushed the leaves of all of them but wasn't able to distinguish a particular scent. I guess the seedlings need to grow bigger to get the reel scent.

Knowing that the Rangpur Lime is a cross between a Citron and a Mandarin, we might get a new Rangpur variety from Italian parents! TBD

Citrus General Discussion / Rust-like spots on leaves
« on: May 17, 2024, 09:48:29 AM »
Hi everyone,

I wanted to get your take on what could be the problem/disease affecting my Hamlin Orange tree. As you can see from the pictures, some rust-like spots have appeared on multiple leaves over the past couple of weeks. I am dealing with scales, which I treated with two horticultural oil treatments (End-All), and these marks appeared afterward.

Could it be related to sunburn from the oil, or is it a known infection? How can I get rid of it?

Many thanks.

Citrus General Discussion / Compact/Darf BH Citron
« on: May 13, 2024, 08:54:19 AM »
Hi all,

I'm just sharing a curious find I found from a guy who reportedly imported the tree from China: a compact Buddha's Hand Citron tree.
This variety supposedly ''emerged'' after a regular BH Citron was subjected to freezing temperature, and only a branch (or small portion) of the
tree survived. The resulting tree exhibits compact but slow growth (Bonzai-like), a bit smaller and stacked leaves, fruit heavily, and has better cold resistance than regular BH. See some pictures of it below.

Did any of you know about this variety?

Best,
Alexandre

Citrus General Discussion / Moro X Torocco
« on: February 28, 2024, 01:11:00 PM »
Hi all,

Seen this cross at MCN, and was wondering if any of you were growing the Moro X Torocco cross. If so, someone can share pictures and a review of this variety?

Thanks

Citrus General Discussion / Finally found some Sfusato Amalfitano!
« on: January 28, 2024, 12:02:53 AM »
Hi all,

I just wanted to share the good news: I found some amazing Sfusato Amalfitano (giant Amalfi lemon: https://agrumilenzi.it/en/negozio/citrusen/lemons/amalfi-lemon-citrus-limon/) at a specialized fruit market. They arrived from the plane yesterday, so the branches were (or seemed) still worthy of trying for rooting. I did six cuttings and am crossing my fingers that some can root.

I bought two lemons, and their leaves were quite different (maybe you can see by looking at the picture). The one with the "pointy nose" also had "pointer" leaves (I suppose closer to what you can expect from a lemon tree) and only two seeds. The other one without a nose had a bunch of seeds and leaves that were more round-shaped. I'll also try to grow them from seed.

Either way, both were delicious, with an incredibly pure lemon smell. It was also possible to eat the whole fruit (pulp, albedo, and peel) simultaneously; it was not too sour.

Best,
Alex

Citrus General Discussion / Amalfi Coast Lemon ID
« on: November 29, 2023, 12:21:43 PM »
I bought this lemon (at a steep price :'( ) in a specialized fruit market, and they were labelled as "Amalfi Coast Lemons". They are not
the "giant" Amalfi Lemons I'm dying to find, but I'm still curious to know the exact variety. They have a big "nipple," which reminds me of Santa Therasa lemons, but those aren't from Amalfi. I've attached pictures of the fruit and one of its dried leaves to see if anyone here would know the exact name of this lemon. Trying to grow from seed!  :D

Alex

Cold Hardy Citrus / Accelerate fruiting process on hybrid seedlings
« on: November 25, 2023, 11:18:34 AM »
Hi all,

New to citrus and citrus crossing. I want to learn the best techniques to have successful hybrid seedlings. That said, I came across a video of
someone with a hybridization project, and the guys said that, to accelerate the fruiting process of the resulting hybrid seedlings, he grafted them to a mature tree.

Is it a legit, fruiting acceleration hack?

Thanks a lot,
Alex

Citrus General Discussion / Who here has a citrus cross breeding project?
« on: November 22, 2023, 11:58:36 AM »
Per the title, I wonder if anyone here has been doing citrus crossing experiments to obtain new hybrid varieties.  :D

For instance, I've come across this video of a guy who had his first result after 15 years (a cross between a Budda hands and an Etrog, I think):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-Dve1iHWwM&t=534s&ab_channel=GardenS

If so, it would be great to have the date of sowing, what are the parents, and some pictures of the tree and fruits (if applicable)!

Hopefully, some of you do!

Best,
Alex

Citrus General Discussion / Fruit ID
« on: October 19, 2023, 07:39:16 PM »
Hi all,

Does anyone know here what this fruit could be? It's not mine: it's from a stranger's tree that bought it from a nursery that claimed it was a Bergamot. That said, when I asked the same nursery for Bergamot, the owner told me that he had a lot of complaints because people thought
it was a "reel" Bergamot tree, but it wasn't supposedly. The stranger told me the leaves smelled like Earl Grey and the fruits made excellent marmalade.

That said, Bergamot is a yellow fruit...Not Orange in color. What is it??

Thanks.

Citrus General Discussion / Planting seeds of Citrus Bergamia
« on: September 20, 2023, 09:38:30 PM »
Hi all,

I am curious: a couple of months ago, I planted two seeds of Bergamot Orange (citrus bergamia) that are now seedlings. That said, it was before
I was made aware that this citrus doesn't grow true to type... So my question is -if they were to survive and thrive till maturity- what would be the type of citrus that they would have? What type of fruit would it produce if it flowers and bears fruit?

The smell from these seedling leaves is quite different from those of lemon trees. Also, both seedlings don't have thorns.

Many thanks,

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Wanted: Amalfi Coast Lemon "sfusato amalfitano"
« on: September 18, 2023, 12:56:39 PM »
Hi all :D,

New here! Developed a great interest in Citrus trees last year. I wanted to reach out to see if anyone here has a sfusato amalfitano tree and would be willing to send me some cuttings and/or seeds (I don't know if they grow true to type, however). I made a rookie mistake with some Bergamot seeds I planted a couple of months ago as they don't grow true to type.

It would be a dream! Let me know, I'm in Canada.

Best,
