Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: New mango tree leaves turning brown
« on: December 03, 2024, 11:01:37 PM »
I think the problem is when you planted the tree when the weather was in the high 30s.
The stress from transport and stuff probably messed with them too.
It's best to plant during spring when the weather warms up, but again Cali weather is really different compared other places so I can't comment on that too much.
The tree still looks healthy though and if all goes well should put out new growth once the conditions are favorable.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Triploid artocarpus breeding

Are we 100% sure that marang is triploid?
I'm getting different answers.
One site says that cultivated marang is tetraploid while diploid sp are the wild ones.
diploid to tetraploid is much more plausible.

Edit - if this is the case, it could be an example of autopolyploidy?

I'm a noob lol could be totally wrong

You can pack mangos in at 10 feet, even regular sized ones.
Check out ultra high density planting.
My friend has 100 or so trees planted in a grid at 8-10 feet apart.
The downside is you must be on top of pruning or else you get less fruit production.
Dwarf trees will get big still, just at a slower rate.

So interesting. Pruning definitely is not the problem- especially since it is only three slow growing varieties. I am more concerned over root growth. I can always prune them according to what is most optimal like how Coconut Cream described. I am beginning to conclude that if any problem arises which would probably be years from now, I can just transplant the middle tree. Although slightly a bummer, it seems like a decently rational option.
Like mentioned, root growth is fine.

Now, there is a dude who did something like high density planting and then he regretted it and ripped up every other tree ;D ;D ;D

There is a whole video on Fruitful Trees YT channel where he interviews Bobby on his ultra high density mango planting.
I highly recommend you watch it.
I can't find it though lol

Yeah lol Horridus!

The good thing is that articarpus atleast create lots of fertile seeds so if one of us gets it is easily spread! If the will is there that is.
The leaves look so similar to a breadfruit, I would never even guess it was different in the first place!

Even some of the best collectors will barely make a dent in all the artocarpus out there

Wish you guys posted more of your plants on your website vs auction like you used to. I understand you make more money that way but I’d personally rather just pay a full set price for plants I’m interested in vs never getting any because of auction snipers. 😢
Don't worry, if you want to win, just be an auction sniper yourself - Sun Tzu, The Art of War ;D

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB Mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana)
« on: November 27, 2024, 05:58:56 PM »
Honestly those are still pretty hard to find in FL.
It may be easier to import seeds...
I've gotten fresh seeds from Indonesia before,
listed them here, and no one bought a single seed 8)
Also maybe can see if someone in PR has trees or seeds.
Higher chance in PR.
But also there may be some random forum member here willing to help you out :)

Have you checked with Xain?

I got 0% on my grafts :'(

Sorry to bring up old topic. There not much info on this tree. I was intrigue by the name "Man Head mango"  and I brought a little 1 gallon Everglade farm because it was listed as dwarf/condo variety. But after I did some research, it doesn't seem to be a compact tree? Truly tropical show it being a big tree. I really want to put it on the ground.
Anyone else have more info on this tree growth?
It is definitely not a compact tree!
I saw the mother at Julian's place this summer.
I don't think everglades farm knows beans about it and tbh, and the only propagator I know of at the moment of cabeza is Julian.

It's a good eugenia tastewise and doesn't have any astringency from reputable sources.
Problem is the fruit are extremely tiny.
Still something very cool to have in the collection!

FYI,
kwai muk scientific name is now artocarpus parvus.

I may have some seeds available in a week or so, and if I'm on break I can send you some.

Do you know how sweet the fruit are from the parent tree of these seeds?
It’s from a good quality tree in FL
But no promises I may not have time to ship 😅😭

My ndm is already flowering too smh...

Anyways, last mango season in FL was a big bust for the most part, and trees that set fruit were not as flavorful as other years.
I'm hoping for a better season this year!

I'm just chilling with my male and female grafted ones.
I fully expect to get fruit in 2026.

Most people with imported trees report random dieback even several years after receiving for some reason. :-[

I’m an idiot.  You are correct mine is delicata .  Too many damn Eugenias to keep track of
I don't blame you man!
I am getting to the point with plinias that I sometimes double collect and forget I already had the plant.
Or I think I have the plant but don't :P

I just can’t imagine the leaves on my minutifolia ever getting that large. All the new growth push tiny little leaves.  Did yours look like this when it was younger?

That looks mixed up to be eugenia delicata...Did u get one?
Minutifolia leavs r a bit bigger :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Would you buy an unnamed fruit tree?

Seems like you got a steal!
I got a yellow plum from walmart for $5, and it's grown really well the last few years....
Now, if only I get the time and motivation to topwork it lol.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pink Illama Half Graft?
« on: November 13, 2024, 03:51:00 PM »
If the growth is coming from above the graft it's good!
If below the graft, no no.
Sometimes when you graft v shaped branches, one side will die back.
Kinda hard to tell from the pictures if it's rootstock or scion.

It's definitely above the rootstock. It seems like someone used a v-shaped scion and grafted it with a reverse cleft graft. For some reason the nodes on the "dead" part are poking through. I want to do a scratch test, but I am afraid of ruining the graft tape.
Ok, that's good, I'd just leave it be.
You can give it more time before scratching, it honestly doesn't matter since you have an alive branch anyways.

That mango looks underdeveloped.
If it's soft at this stage, it could be rotting.

It seems to be gin berry.
The flowers and small size reflect that.

I talked to Joe about this one, and it's a really good fruit, but super hard to grow.
