What causes leaf drop on citrus?
« on: July 07, 2025, 04:32:57 PM »
Hi All,

My (2) mandarin trees (in pots) have been outside for well over a month now, both seem to be doing well. This morning I walk the garden to find (12) leaves from one tree on the ground, with a stem that is bare except for the little nubs that went to the leaves. Watering is going well, I use the finger AND a gauge, but as with all potted plants, the first 2-3 inches can be dry as a bone and the at the 15” line it can be a mud cake. Any ideas? Night temps are hitting 50-51 F and days are touching 75-80 F.

Dave

Typically caused by stress. Moving outside might be a big adjustment. Better to ease them out a few hours bring back in then leave them out longer each time until they are permenently outside. They dry out quickly outside in pots too.

Frequently ones finger to test for moisture can cause problems.  The top inch of soil frequently is dry, while the deeper soil still fully wet.  A better method of testing is by lifting the container.

Right on.  It is the method I use.

There is a yellow central vein on some of the leaves, and the pot looks large. My guess is that the plant has a root problem due to overwatering.
