Lemon tree dropping leaves
« on: November 28, 2025, 11:56:39 AM »
I have a lemon tree is 5-1-1 mix. It's been in that mix for about 1.5 years. Recently it started dropping green leaves. I'd say it's dropped about 1/3 of the green leaves in the last 3 months or so.

I water and fertilize regularly.

Any ideas on some possible causes?

Thanks!

I've grown a lot of container citrus and having healthy green leaves drop isn't a problem I remember seeing.  I don't have much advice here other than the usual suggestion to check the container for dry or overly wet areas of the potting medium.

Has the tree out grown the container? Also look to see if the the bark chips has disintegrated into a mesh.

Thank you both. I checked the medium and it looks okay. It's not overly wet or dry, but I think previously, it may have dried out a little so I think that may have been it.

It's also not root bound.

I'll keep an eye on the soil and watering and see what happens.

It is very difficult to over water a 5-1-1 medium to the point of causing damage to the tree.  5-1-1 mediums have a very high aeration level even after soaking in water for a while.

Last week I noticed that my variegated pink eureka had also dropped a bunch of healthy leaves, maybe 25% of the canopy.  The tree seems fine, I'm not worried about it, but I guess it isn't so rare.

This tree is in a container hanging from the roof of my greenhouse, and gets full sun when the sun is out.
