Calamansi / Calamondin as rootstock

Hi everyone,

I have some calamansi (aka calamondin) cuttings that I've successfully rooted. Once they have a few branches, I'd like to try making them into multi-variety trees. What are some types of citrus that would be compatible?

I believe it is used in the Phillipines as a rootstock, along with Calamandarin. Maybe try researching that. From what I recall, it was used as rootstock for Pummelo.
It should be OK for related things, like Fortunella and Mandarin, maybe Limes ?

I don't think anyone would use the calamondin or calamandrin for pomelo rootstock. The pomelo fruit is way to large for a small rootstock like that.

Although just for fun, I did graft one of the largest pomelo varieties onto an Australian finger lime and it will be funny looking when it has this huge fruit on a skinny rootstock.

Sounds like it plays well with fortunella, poncirus, and mandarins, and does not get along with pommelo/grapefruit genetics. Reasonable chance it does okay with Australian/Papuan citrus species.

In California, Meiwa kumquat is incompatible on Troyer citrange (and probably on Carrizo). It is also incompatible on the calamondin and on Citrus shunkokan.

McClean and Engelbrecht (1958) report that Nagami kumquat budded on seedlings of Nagami were incompatible. This is not surprising since Nagami produces only hybrid seedlings.

Well that is unexpected. I did not expect at all that Meiwa would be incompatible on calamondin, or that Nagami wouldn't go onto its own seedlings.

A very good paper, bussone! I am glad to have read it now because it believed Calamondin would be a very good rootstock because it has so resistant roots as a potted plant. It was also new to me that Calamondin is probably NOT a Kumquat hybrid.
