Mango Thief Caught
« on: September 08, 2023, 04:22:24 PM »
I’ve read numerous forum postings regarding mango thievery in Florida…so sad.
Yesterday evening, my neighbors alerted me of a parked car in front of my house with a child, 6-8 years old helping himself to the few mangos on my tree!  I confronted the child and the mother.  She claims she was going to ask for permission.  I sternly reminded her that you ask first…not take then ask.  As I was taking my phone out to photograph them, they threw two unripen Orange Sherbets and sped off.
I figured karma will eventually get her.  I can see it now… one day in the future and her son is in juvenile hall or in prison for stealing, robbery, etc. - it was her values that she passed on to her son.   I hope she remembers it was all on her.  What a sad thing to see, a mother teaching her child to trespass and steal.

Some time ago while socializing with some coworkers I discovered that one of them lived only a few doors down from my uncle.  My uncle has a nice hobby orchard including a large old apple tree by the road.  My coworker remembered my uncle as the mean guy who scolded him for bringing his children to come and take the apples (without asking, they had never even met).  I explained how it is a lot of work to grow fruit trees, they aren't just free food.  Based on this and various comments I have read along the lines of "why don't we just plant fruit trees in public spaces so everyone can have free fruit?" I think most people have so little understanding of the work involved that they think taking fruit is like picking up a pinecone or a fallen leaf.  To them it isn't stealing and they think you are crazy for caring if somebody takes some of the "free fruit that you have an infinite supply of"

I am not excusing shitty behavior at all, and in most cases I am sure people know they are stealing and don't care, but I wonder if this is partly because people don't value things they don't understand.

@Brad, you have an awesome property…. Lots of open space and almost no traffic.  Affordable Backwoods property is hard to find in So Cal.

@Ben Mango, I agree that they don’t look like the OS photos I have seen.  These would have grown larger and turned yellow when ripe. I posted a similar photo a few years ago for confirmation and someone mentioned Sweet Tart - definitely doesn’t taste like sweet tart. Everyone who has tasted the mangos comments on the orange creamy flavor.  I had some OS shipped from Florida this year and my OS definitely has more of the Orange flavor.  The only other mango graft that I have that would have an Orange flavor would be Seacrest / Triple Sec.  It could be soil and dry heat that affects the appearance and flavor.  My Valencia Prides always has a nice light coconut flavor.

As mentioned already, Florida grown OS don't look like that. The one on the right looks slightly like a sweet tart. Does the sap smell like citrus?

No, people don't value things they don't understand. I've been fighting my HOA board who want to destroy my garden.  Not one gardener on that board, and their houses look like shit landscape-wise.  They don't even appreciate beauty/aesthetics.  They're perfectly happy to turn the community into a barren wasteland as long as no one is violating the rules they arbitrarily created.

I think people rationalize stealing fruit because their idea is you won't miss whatever fruit they choose to steal.  Other people like the thrill, as well.  Yes, I guess a gun pointed at them wouid make them re-evaluate unless they come back with their own guns and shoot your place up.

I have lots of fruit thief stories, including a mother and child episode very similar to the OP's. Agree, many people don't realize it really is "theft" or only consider it a minor victimless crime.  Others are well aware, and do it anyway.

Don't even have a HOA, but had a complaint from a neighbor about passionvines blocking part of the sidewalk. Code Compliance threatened to fine me if they weren't cut back in about 10 days. They are cut now, and it looks like shit. Was beautiful before, with mandavilla mixed in and lots of flowers.

The person who complained leaves massive dog doo in my side yard, where they complained about the vines hanging. A much worse code violation itself.

Do you have fence around your yard?  Maybe it is time to install a fence, which can be an excellent deterrent to temptation even if it is not that tall.

I also agree those do not look like Orange Sherbet. Sometimes the mangos grown in California look differently than those grown in Florida due to incomplete pollination which causes atrophied seeds which then can alter the shape of the fruit. The fruit formed by the incomplete pollination is often referred to as nubbins and one of the characteristics is that it is generally shorter and more rounded in shape. The seed is normally super thin and has either no embryo or a very small embryo. These fruit are often much smaller and have a very high Brix, when grown in SoCal.

That still doesn’t look like an OS to me, however. It does resemble Sweet Tart. If you post a picture of the fruit and the seed opened up, we may be able to give you a better guess. Nubbin ST usually have very prominent lenticils and the fruit frequently crack so rarely make it to full maturity. Normally pollinated ST usually have a pretty large seed with multiple embryos inside. OS rarely get pollinated in my area because of it being susceptible to fungal diseases so even though it is also Polyembryonic, it has fewer embryos and a smaller seed.

I'll chime in with a slightly different opinion, though only slightly. I was a homeless kid in Miami and a significant part of my diet from age 7 to 12 was fallen fruit I collected from trees growing near sidewalks or in the right-of-way. If I didn't "steal" that fruit, I was at risk of starving. I know it's a different value set than some people have, but I'm in favor of "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need."

If someone was truly in need of food, I would have no problem with them picking fruit from my trees, now that I have a house and yard to grow fruit of my own.

Now, when people steal all the fruit from someone's orchard, or pick entire trees clean to sell the fruit, that's a completely different matter.

Good points about homelessness and the needy, Drymifolia. Sharing and helping others is one of the joys of growing fruit and veggies. I like to think people taking really need it, for them or their families.

My fruit thieves drive Audis, BMW's, and Mercedes. They are the worst. Often very rude too. I asked one guy if I could help him, will not type his angry and threatening response. Sped off in his new Audi suv with angry wife in tow.

Workers in the neighborhood who snatch fruit are less irritating to me. But I still confront them, as they pick unripe fruit or take too much.

My main goal when interacting with unidentified fruit takers (UFTs), is to educate them about what it takes to grow and when the best time to pick is; and that asking is the way to go. I also give plants to people, hoping they will grow their own and share with others.

...and yes, those are NOT orange sherbets. ST is possible. If they taste citrusy, my guess would be Orange Essence.

It is wonderful to hear that you have overcome odds and sorrow. It is terrible thing to go through childhood with hunger, but now you have your own house and yard. That is  a great blessing from God.

Well, we heard from Karl Marx earlier in this thread and now from Jesus. Human nature being what it is, I am fairly certain that everyone who ever stole from me thought they needed it more than I did (whether it was actually true or not). Its interesting to me that the line in Hebrew culture was drawn based on the use of a container: a person was free to eat on the spot if they were hungry and in need. If they carried it off the property in a container, it was considered theft. So, if I look out my window and see a guy who looks like he is on hard times eating out of my yard, I am going to go out and offer what assistance I can. If a guy in an Audi pulls up and starts hauling my produce off in buckets...I'm calling in the cops.
