Title: Fresh Mangosteen near Fort Lauderdale?
Post by: FloridaManDan on July 23, 2022, 07:44:02 PM
Hi all,

Was curious if anybody has recent experience buying fresh Purple or Seashore Mangosteen in or near Fort Lauderdale? Every store I call either doesn't have them in stock or doesn't pick up. I've tried a ton of local markets, stores, and farmers markets, and nothing! The only place I found purple ones was at Sprouts Farmers Market and all the ones I purchased were rotten and moldy inside. Broke my heart.

Would definitely appreciate some direction on this. Willing to purchase from a home grower too, but cant justify the $120 boxes from MiamiFruit. Thanks!!

Some collectors in the area have seashore mangosteen. It’s sour but really good in my opinion. Others hate it.
As for mangosteen, it’ll be all imported from out of the country…at least it’s not going to be grown in FL. Not the right climate for growing them.

Ah, I thought Miami was considered tropical enough for them. What a shame! Maybe ill get lucky with someone who collects seashore mangosteen (or ill just have to buy my own seeds and start from scratch!). I appreciate the response Jabo

I mean some people have fruited mangosteen in FL, but it would not be on a commercial scale or even enough to sell. Just some collectors. The fruit and spice park has a tree so you could try to hit them up (fruiting g.hombroniana aka seashore mangosteen)

Finding seashore Mangosteen isnnot necessarily lucky, unless you like sour warheads.
There are tree’s ar fruit and spice park that can drop tons of fruits.

G. mangostana has been done and is doable in SoFL, but with extra care. It would take years for someone to do for production, and don't know of anyone trying.

Best bet for buying fruits in US is PR and nearby spots, maybe HI. As already posted, season has passed.

As for seashore, I love Warheads candy! Yet to try ours, even though 9+ feet.

We still have lots of mangosteen here in Costa Rica.  But for Florida, I think you would do better with achachariu, Luc's, and lots of other mangosteen relatives than with g. hombriana, seashore.  I don’t think that’s a commercial fruit anywhere.
