Hammer, my growing conditions are very different than yours. I don’t know what would grow or taste best in your intense heat. Here in my very mild coastal SoCal conditions I really like Goldfinger, Dwarf Brazilian and Mysore. I have yet to try my Dwarf Red, Gros Michel or Raja Puri.

I fertilize with a lot of different fertilizers. But the main one that I use on bananas is the vigoro 6-4-6. I add some extra potassium to make it 6-4-9.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Huge bunch of Goldfinger bananas
« on: September 28, 2023, 12:21:59 PM »
There has been a lot of banana discussion lately on this forum, which I think is great. I usually post banana related stuff on bananas.org, but that forum is very difficult to use. It has way too many ads and the messaging sucks. So I’m glad there is some banana discussion going on here.

I wanted to post some pictures of my current Goldfinger banana bunch. For some reason the last couple of times this plant has fruited it has been taller than usual. The bunches have also been very large. Here are some pictures of it with flower emerging and as it is now with bunch developing. It is eleven feet tall.

Thanks

My Brewster tree, in Long Beach, also has mostly small seeds this year. It must have been a change to our spring weather that caused this.

If you bought a tissue culture banana plant from Florida Hill, who knows what you got.  Tissue culture banana plants get mislabeled all the time and on top of that Florida Hill has a horrible reputation for mislabeled plants.  Who knows what you got.  It could be anything.  The bummer is you won't know for 1-2 years.  Buyer beware.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Brewster Lychee trees for sale
« on: August 30, 2023, 01:05:09 PM »
Hi all, I have many well rooted Brewster Lychee trees for sale.  These trees have been growing off the tree for over a year.  They are very well rooted.  I have plants that range in price from $60-$300.  The $60 trees are 2.5' tall.  The $85 trees are 3' tall.  The $120 trees are 4' tall.  The largest trees are in 15 gallon pots and are 5-6' tall.  They have thick trunks with many side branches.  They cost from $200-$300 each.  For the next two weeks I will give 15% off to TFF members.  These are for pick up only in Long Beach CA.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi all, these are very well rooted plants of Badila Black Sugarcane.  Badila Black is also known as Asian Black or Thai Black.  It is known to be a very sweet and soft cane that is excellent for chewing or juicing.  $25 each plus shipping.  Shipping to California is around $8 each.  or about $10 for two plants.  You can mix and match with my Buddha Belly and Garcinia plants listed elsewhere on this forum.

Thanks,
Bill

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Banana pups for sale, will ship
« on: August 24, 2023, 04:15:48 PM »
I will ship these pups when they reach about 15-18” long. Shipping to west coast is about $8-$10 and east coast is about $10-$12 each. If you buy more than one the shipping usually only goes up a dolor or two.

Mysore. Pros. Grows giant racks of delicious bananas with a slight raspberry taste. It is a vigorous grower with pretty leaves. Cons. Gets tall and needs propping.

Goldfinger. Pros. Medium size plant, 6-10’, that usually doesn’t need propping. Delicious bananas with a subacid zing to them. Cons. None.

California Gold. Pros. Stays short, 6-8’, never need propping and is very cold hardy.  Fruit can be eaten fresh or used as a plantain. Excellent plantain. Cons. Other bananas taste better when eaten fresh.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi all, I hav one Lemon Zest seedling mango tree for sale. It is in a tree pot which helps promote a deep taproot. I believe the deep taproots really help mangos grow fast in SoCal. This plant is almost 4’ tall. This is a great option for anyone who lives in a low heat part of SoCal. Seedling grow much faster than grafted trees here. And Lemon Zest is poly. So you have about a 75% chance of it being true to seed. So identical to a grafted tree. $70. Local pickup in Long Beach. Or I’m driving down to San Diego next week and might be able to deliver it.

PM if interested.

Bill
