Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this white sapote ripe in June?

Dear TFF family,
I'm super new to white sapotes, my tree gave exactly one edible fruit last year, but this year it's really pushing to the limits and I started to feel sorry to the yellow leaves.
Would you think these fruits are starting to ripen already? I thought they are meant to ripen around October...

Citrus General Discussion / Top working mature citrus trees - do you keep a nursing limb?

Question on top working mature citrus trees. Do you keep nursing limbs? Or cut down to stump?

I have two citrus trees whose flavor is less than satisfactory -- I prefer sweet seedless and easy to peel. The 15ft orange tree is currently loaded with fruits, and 6ft mandarin tree is done fruiting for the season. I kind of plan to graft 3 varieties to each tree.

I removed the orange tree's left limb (old picture below still shows it) last spring and grafted onto new shoots. Most of them grew very slowly, and I suspect the tree directed most energy to fruits??

My main concern is how RISKY is it to not keep any nurse branches at all, for larger and smaller citrus trees. Both produced heavily this season.

Avocados from seeds...

In a series of discussions, someone (A) claimed he had grown multiple avocado trees from seed in SoCal and all of them fruited around year 5. Another (B) said his relative planted a costco avocado seed in East Asia and it fruited in year three.

I'm curious what you think. What is the likelihood of the above being all true? If you guesstimate, how likely is 5 avocado seedlings all fruiting at age 5, assuming excellent care? (We all know they don't grow true to seed, or even no fruit at all. So how risky is it, really?)

Hi TFF family, I made the huge mistake of not labeling my grape seedlings sigh.
Wondering if I may have some ID help... My records only say blueberry grape, perfume (muscat) grape, and unknown crooked...
Any hints to maybe find out if any of them is concord? I'm suspecting the 3rd one. Thank you very much!

Does anyone recognize this avocado variety? All fruits are shaped like eggplant (?), received them overripe, dark thin skin, very creamy flesh.

Shade tolerance, anyone? I have limited growing space and every square inch counts. I hope to plant a fruit tree at a spot shaded partly by a nearby large tree. Between fig, wax jambu, guava, or pomegranate, which one do you think has the largest likelihood of fruiting in part sun / part shade, zone 10a? Many thanks!!

By the way I'm impressed how my mulberry is able to pull off fruiting in even more shaded spot of my yard, where a persimmon tree was barely hanging on previously. My loquat tree seems to be relatively OK with shade too, but they are not yet at fruiting age.

Help request from a friend... Gardener gave her once-beautiful-and-productive peach tree a bad pruning 5 years ago, and it is just not the same tree again. New growth on the top only, a few fruits 2 years ago, no fruits at all last year.
What do you recommend to save the poor tree? Topping? Girdling? Many many thanks in advance!!

I attempted to top and multi-graft my 3 yr old peach tree this spring, and all of the bark grafts failed while V grafts on a small side branch took. Right now the tree is putting all its energy toward those grafts, and the whole tree looks unbalanced. Is there anyway to induce new growth from the tree trunk? Thank you very much!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black nursery pots - how to protect trees from overheat?

I have run out of ground space long time ago, and some trees will settle in 15 or 25 gallon nursery pots, sobs. However, all nursery pots are in black and they tend to heat up badly when weather hits 90+F.

Is there anything I could do to avoid damage? I cannot mulch since these pots will likely sit on concrete (sad!!!). Anyone has experience with painting the pots to a different color (maybe green? I have a few pots from Monrovia Nursery in green) Or wrapping them up with light color material? Or provide shading on ground level? Will these help? Also since trees stay in those pots long term, any suggestions to make them last longer?

Hello all :D  I am trying to build a mini greenhouse for rooting the cuttings I recently received: figs, mulberry, and pomegranates. Well, the frame is done (4' x 3' x 2' from 3/4" pvc pipes plus 3-way elbows), but I am not sure if the plastic sheet I have on hand will work - not sure where they came from either, construction maybe?

My friend says it will burn the plants for sure because air will not circulate. I thought the idea of greenhouse is to lock in the humidity and maintain heat...? Ideas based on the photo? If it is not suitable, any recommendations for local selections? Many thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / RIP... second loquat tree loss

I suppose we officially lost another loquat tree. Not sure how the first one died, but the second tree (4' tall, growing new leaves and with 2 graft takes) basically turned yellow-brown in less than 3 weeks. A trunk scratch test shows dead brown near the root, while top of the tree still has some green. I guess it died from the root and probably beyond redemption. Could it be a case of fire blight?

Loquats are said to be easy growers and we somehow lost two in a row already :'( while the allegedly more fragile lychee / longan are doing OK, knock on wood... Could it be some poor gardening practice? Tears. As an afterthought, I just saw from my 10/23 photo the trunk had cracked bark near the root. I wonder what was it?

The tree is in the ground. No it's not a dwarf variety.
It's an older fuerte that shoots for the star in every way possible.
Revenges hard when pruned.

When you trim the tree too much it won't fruit.
When you not trim the fruits are out of reach.

How do you train large variety avocado trees so they stay about 2 stories tall?
Yearly pruning? Weight? Talking to it nicely? Just let it go?

My small fig tree in pot has repeatedly tried to fruit, dropping its leaves to exactly two leaves while doing so. I usually removed the fruitlets immediately. But when I returned from a recent trip, voila, it finally found a chance to fruit ::) I gave in and hope it will ripen properly.

I also have multiple mulberry cuttings in pots. Two tiny ones from my neighbor were planted the earliest but look the smallest. Finally understood why: cuttings received in March, and by September each plant happily produced 2-3 fruits for my enjoyment. The others (diff. variety) just focused on vegetative growth.

In your experience, what trees vigorously push for fruiting even in their youngest stage?

Hello all from 100F Southern Cal...  :) 

I am hoping to top my 3 yrs old peach tree (nursery likely screwed it up and gave us a poor variety) and graft it coming spring. The trunk diameter is roughly 3 inches. When would you recommend topping it, so there will be fresh greenwoods ready for graft when scion exchanges come up in Jan / Feb 2016?

For a mature citrus tree ~1.5 stories tall, how much trimming is required before it will consider taking new grafts? Your thoughts are much much appreciated!!

Dear forum friends, any recommendations on buying fresh figs in San Gabriel Valley,  CA?

I fly to Chicago next weekend, and my friends requested fresh figs. Really not sure how well these delicate fruits travel, but first I'll need to FIND some good tasting fruits LOL

No luck with Wholefoods / Trader Joe. Not sure about Costco yet. Any farmers market that I should check out? Or does anyone have a large tree in the backyard that is still in season? Tips for buying and storing are much appreciated in advance :D

Our jujube tree (not sure what cultivar, lang maybe?) has been a very reliable producer ever since planted 3 years ago. We always joked that if everything else fails, this tree will do great (relative to its small size).

Well, this year it had lots of new growth, bloomed beautifully, but only very few fruits are set. Scratching my head and wondering why? I admit I did not feed my trees during the fruiting season, just like the past 2 years...

I have been trying to utilize more greywater for irrigating the vegetables and fruit trees. Have not implemented laundry to landscape yet, but need to find garden friendly cleaning products first lest I kill the plants with toxic water!

Does anyone have recommendations on specific products? I mostly read about the "Oasis" brand but they are $$ and only available online? Any DIY recipes that you use and seem to work well? Many thanks!!

I have a dragon fruit in 5 gallon pot and am thinking about transplanting it to ground. The only space available is right by a south facing brick wall. Would having a dragon fruit planted close to the wall cause damage to it in the long run? How aggressive is dragon fruit root system and how close is too close? Thank you very very much!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Caring for new grafts

All of a sudden I have quite a few new grafts on hand: mostly avocado (in ground), one loquat (in ground) and *maybe* one guava (in pot). I am totally obsessed and checking them way too frequently... Considering it's end of May already, what precautions would I need to protect these newly-taken grafts from the elements and summer heat? Paper bag / shade cloth?  I read it's better to keep the parafilm and grafting tape on for about 2 more weeks to make sure the union is secure, as long as the tape does not girdle?

On the side note, the unsuccessful grafts rotted as rainwater got trapped inside the transparent tape. Is there anything to be done in my future attempts? Tips truly appreciated!!!



I bumped into the above photo from myavocadotrees.com and wished I used my "tree wound" on hand: somehow thought it's for bark grafting only!

Citrus General Discussion / Grafting: mix & match varieties

My navel orange tree bears lot of fruits (too much) and they are difficult to pick due to height and canopy density. I am thinking of trimming it to a more manageable size (thank you Viking Guy for detailed tips) and attempt to graft some other varieties onto it (fingers crossed).

What citrus varieties go well together? Good tasting orange / grapefruit / lemon recommendations? Timing recommendations?

I also have a smaller tangerine tree to work with, although to be honest, we can never get enough from that tree, haha.

I saved a full sun spot in the garden for my tiny, still-in-the-pot black pearl wax apple, have always believed it requires full sun. today I heard from a nursery employee that wax apple actually needs shade for summer to protect its fruits from popping open. when asked how many hours of sun is preferred, she said 1-2 hours (!!)

is it true for southern California? I know wax apple is delicate and needs protection from frost, but never thought about shading it from summer heat. ideas? suggestions? Thank you so much.
