Tropical Fruit Discussion / Blackberry problems
« on: June 17, 2021, 05:22:21 PM »
A couple years ago, I bought 5 or so plants of different blackberry varieties. Last year, they escaped their assigned area. This year, I found them growing out of the decorative bushes around the house and in a a few other random spots FAR away from where they were originally planted. If you don't see me post next year, the blackberries took over everything.

I always love looking at pictures of other folks' harvests. Please boast to me about interesting/delicious stuff you are growing (with pictures of fruit if possible). :)

For me, this year, my peaches have the most fruit I've ever seen on them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing cacao criollo here?

It is a superior flavored cacao plant that is supposed to make top tier quality chocolate but it is so hard to find an air layer. I have been in search for one for over a year... :/

If you or someone you know is selling a female golden kiwi (and male maybe too / I'm not sure if my green male kiwi would pollinate it), please please let me know!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Just got my baby "1 year old" achacha!

I was hesitant to buy from this seller (fast growing trees) originally because their claim of the tree potentially fruiting in its first year seemed to good to be true and the prices seemed a bit steep. My mangosteen is a much slower grower... But I risked it and I couldn't be happier!! Apparently they graft them onto older rootstock. The tree is about a metre tall!!!

The citruses must be cold hardy to zone 8.

I am trying to grow as many varieties as I can in my climate. I already have: navel orange, (a mandarin I'm checking the variety for but it's not the best flavor wise), meyer lemon. I'll update this post once I double check the mandarin variety.

The information I've found online was limited. I've seen a few never varieties that seem to be able to be grown even down in Florida but wanted to ask nonetheless. Never seen anyone with an older tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Zone pushing
« on: February 13, 2021, 09:11:59 PM »
I am in zone 7b (borderline zone /8). Last winter and this, I left some citruses (Navel orange, lemon, and mandarin) potted outside near the AC unit. From what I understand, the trees are rated zone 9. Surprisingly, not only did they survive but I also got really good fruit for the first time from those trees. This got me thinking - Could I grow things like mangos and citruses in ground in my climate with some zone pushing techniques? Does anyone know if the combination of the following would be successful to push an entire zone: non-led christmas lights, soil heating wiring, and wind sheltering by planting close to buildings
