Tropical Fruit Discussion / Parfianka Pomegranate Blooming...like now
« on: September 25, 2023, 02:29:47 PM »
I'm new to growing pomegranate.  This is the 2nd year of Parfianka for me. It's only about a 3.5 ft bush.  I got 3 fruits this year. In the last few weeks I have a branch sending out blooms, it's September and the end of summer. Is this normal or bizarre? We have had some weird weather this year in California.

It sounds like Southern California may get hit with it's first tropical storm since 1939. Stay safe everyone.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Siam Ruby banana.... edible?
« on: June 19, 2023, 05:34:32 PM »
Hi all, I found this banana at the least expected place, my local Costco. It was also labeled as "edible banana."  Unfortunately my search found conflicting info as some has said ornamental and some has said edible.  I always thought it was ornamental.  Depending on which type, they will be place in different spots in my yard.  Just wanted to also say, back 15 years ago when I was knee deep in rare and variegated Musa this was always on my list. I recall pups back then were $400 or $500 each. Wow how things change, got this for a measly $20 or so ahah.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Managing sugar cane patches
« on: April 23, 2023, 01:45:18 PM »
Hey everyone, how do all of you manage your sugar cane patches?  I only recently started growing sugar cane last summer. So this is one's years growth and all is pretty new to me.  I recently stripped the lower leaves.  But I noticed on videos and some people have patches that grow only 3 or 4 large canes.  Is there a prefer method kind of like with bananas where you only leave 2 or 3 pups.  Here's mine, it's a bit of a mess. Thanks!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Grapes - what did I just eat?
« on: March 19, 2023, 10:18:39 PM »
These were the best grapes I ever had and was not like anything I had before. Mind you I've really only had grapes from the supermarkets.  But this was amazing. It was not just sweet and juicy but the texture was the best part. It was the firmest crispiest grape I had, the skin you would not even know it's there. I picked this up at our local Hispanic chain super supermarket. It looks like it's from Peru.  Anyone know what variety this is?  Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dimorcarpus Longan subspecies Malesianus (?)
« on: October 21, 2021, 04:26:28 AM »
Is anyone currently growing this longan subspecies?  Can anyone confirm if this is it?  I initially got seeds of what I thought was your regular longans over 10 years ago.  It produce a fruit that has a thicker skin, much thinner flesh, crisper juicier flesh, and very fragrant perfume longan smell.  The skin turns yellow when ripe vs brown. Below is a picture of the fruits it produced.  The left side is the subspecies Malesianus I think and the right is your regular longan.
