Tropical Fruit Discussion / Black sapote problems
« on: August 02, 2020, 09:51:17 PM »
Hi all

I have 2 in ground black sapote, reinecke and beauty(?). I've had them for 3 years. They flower every year, and each year the flowers dry up and fall off. They look very similar to persimmon flowers (I believe they are related). I know some plants have male flowers, but as I have grafted plants the source material should be able to bear fruit.

I'm at a loss at this point and am thinking of replacing the trees or topworking them. It would be a shame to sacrifice 2 great looking trees, but after 3 years and with no fruit to show for it, I'm hard pressed to keep these when they should have fruited within a year.

Am I missing anything? Doing something wrong?

I recently bought gold nugget, dang rasimi, and black gold scioms from oscar at fruitlovers. Great quality and received quickly. Now I'd like to source some other varieties as well. A friend and I have 20 more seedlings that are looking to be grafted.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: mcdill white sapote scions

Buy or trade.

Seemed firmly attached to the roots but as soon as it touched soil it disappeared and got lost in the rubble.

Any thoughts? Is this a parasite?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Who dun it?
« on: March 22, 2019, 11:16:45 AM »
I grafted some avocado scions that were gifted to me by a generous member. Grafts had taken and were slowly pushing out.

I checked on them yesterday and was surprised and disappointed to find out something or someone had cut off the tops of 2 grafts. One graft is below the cut line and has popped buds so it is not a total loss.

The question is who or what did the damage.

Was it:
A) the gardeners who came yesterday and trimmed the lawn and probably used an edger?

B) a critter whi bit through the wood for fun or food?

C) one of my kids playing baseball in the front yard?

I don't know the answer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 6 pounders!
« on: January 26, 2019, 06:08:53 PM »

Never heard of this variety. The reports of it being watery in November are off-putting as I wonder how much it can really improve afterwards.

As an aside, I've had trouble with other large avos (queen) ripening evenly. Is that a common problem with large avos?

The real kicker is that my wife is the one who spotted this article and sent it to me 😀. She is slowly turning to the fruit side.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / E4 seed: stud or dud?
« on: July 23, 2018, 01:26:44 AM »
Pulled this out of an E4 tonight. I donít think Iíve ever seen a mango seed so small. Is it viable or is it a dud or the equivalent of a cuke?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Happy Eid!
« on: June 15, 2018, 05:35:09 PM »
Today marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and Eid is one of the big Muslim celebrations. So if you have a Muslim buddy give him or her a call or holler and wish them a happy Eid and/or send them a basket of yummy fruit (unless they live in California and it will get confiscated ...).

My wife bought me something from Lyn at treasure of the tropics!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Whitish powder near my avocado grafts
« on: June 09, 2018, 03:47:08 PM »
Iíve noticed this whitish powder surrounding some of my avocado grafts on my largest tree. Not sure what to make of i it but I canít imagine itís healthy. Any idea what it might be and/or how to treat it if needed?

Photos below
Tree is holding over a hundred Avos. Maybe 200-300

My landscaping project is moving along. About a week behind schedule but first set of plants went into the ground today.

I have an 8-10 foot plot set aside for a nabal avocado. I have a 6 month old nabal about 2 feet tall and my original 4 year old nabal that has been through some rough times but scraped along and is alive. I can keep both trees as I have a side spot 6-8 feet) in the front yard for the other tree. The dilemma is that the backyard spot would be permanent. The front yard spot is for experimenting so it may come down in a few years if I decide to change it.

I think I know the answer but which plant should get the prime/permanent spot? I ask because Iíd like to get an opinion other than my own before committing. Big prokect and Iím getting anxious.

Thanks in advance

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango epidemic spreading in my yard
« on: April 03, 2018, 12:22:28 PM »
About 6 weeks ago I noticed my coconut cream tree started to wilt and have dieback. I thought maybe it was frost damage from a few really cold nights. 4 weeks ago, I noticed similar symptoms in my sweet tart, juicy peach, peach cobbler, and Edward trees. The Edward tree had dieback straight back to the graft union.

Today I noticed cotton candy tree is showing some early signs with leaf spotting and browning and some wilting of the green branches. Seems like an infection of sorts to me as all the affected trees are in close proximity to each other.

Any thoughts as to infection type? Phomopsis? Verticillium wilt? Anthracnose?

Any way to save the trees? Iíve cut some way back to clean bark. I sprayed with fungicide today. Any systemic drenches that could be done?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Avocado and annona rootstcok
« on: March 19, 2018, 01:27:48 AM »
So Iíve nearly exhausted my supply of avocado rootstock and have multigrafted my 6 annona trees and still have more wood that Iíd like to use.

Would prefer to graft onto rootstock rather than onto already grafted varieties and have to deal with any potential I terstock issues.

If you have any for sale or trade please let me know

Citrus General Discussion / Daisy vs daisy sl
« on: March 17, 2018, 01:34:25 PM »
I had been looking for daisy sl for over a year now. No luck. One large nursery told me that many growers swapped out the daisy for the sl variety without changing labels.

I caved in and bought a daisy tree from evergreen nursery in northern San Diego. The fruit were excellent! And seedless as well. Does anyone know if thereís any truth to the seedless swap?

Otherwise Iíve found a large grower that would graft and grow them for me at 6-9$ a pop, minimum 100 trees. I donít need 100 trees though.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado grafting advice - what to do next?
« on: March 10, 2018, 04:29:16 PM »
I grafted several varieties towards the end of January. I have some multigrafted trees as well as single traditionally grafted trees (1 Scion per rootstock).

Iíve had a higher success rate than Iíve ever had (better than 50% with several scions still green and only 1 dead or black one).

For the grafts that are pushing on the single scion trees, a decent number have rootstock shoots that have grown from below the graft union and are now taller than the grafted buds. Should I leave these be or cut them back? Thanks

Iíll be in the Fort Lauderdale Miami area on Monday morning and will have some free hours. Any places that are definite meccas for fruit hobbyists and are welcoming to visitors?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Clonal rootstock suckers
« on: February 10, 2018, 06:58:26 PM »
I have a sharwil avocado on Dusa rootstock and noticed that I never see suckers growing from it. Does anyone know if they are treated somehow to prevent suckers? Any ways to induce suckers? Iím curious about dusa and want to learn more about it.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / 6GM25/ royal crimson cherry
« on: February 10, 2018, 06:50:15 PM »
Anyone in SoCal or in non traditional cherry growing territory successfully get this variety to flower? I have 2 trees and this is the second year Iíve had them. Buds are breaking but no flowers (again). Wondering if this is not truly low chill as the tag states ithe chill hours are questionable.

I have royal lee and Minnie royal that have fruited for me and one of them has 6 little Cherries  already so far (I know itís early in the season)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / CRFG cache
« on: January 23, 2018, 12:39:24 AM »
I've been to 3 of the scion wood exchanges this year and made out like a bandit  ;D

I got my hands on the following:

Apricot   Cultivar
   Goldbeck's Perfection
   Tropical Gold
   Tardif de Bordaniel
   Golden Amber
   Gold Kist
   Shiro Kaga
JB 47 White Peach (locally named cultivar after Jim Bathgate)
   Flavor Top
   Green Gage
   Flavor Treat
   Daily 11

         White lavender fat

         Fig 9336

The San Diego meeting is next. Anyone grab anything interesting? I hadn't heard of Flavor Treat or Flavor Top, but apparently they are mainly commercial varieties and not really widely released to the public. Daily 11 is a very large avocado but I heard taste is average. I hear a lot about choquette avocados from Florida and was told it is a typical West Indian variety (not my favorite profile) but willing to try it out. I don't know anything about Linda avocado.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please help ID this avocado
« on: January 08, 2018, 12:37:55 AM »
At a recent crfg meeting, I received budwood from an avocado seedling tree that reportedly makes excellent large avocados in Riverside. I have quite a few (albeit junior) trees and wasn't looking to experiment but figured what the heck. As a bonus, the person who brought the wood also gave me an avocado from said tree. Attached is a picture. I'll update the post when it ripens and I try it but does anyone have an idea of what variety it is or may have come from? The donor told me it came from a seedling tree on an avocado farm. He didn't know too much else about it but there are fuerte trees on that farm (this is obviously not a fuerte avocado).

Any help is appreciated!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Advice on tree placement for landscaping project
« on: September 13, 2017, 10:58:58 PM »
After 7 years of collecting trees and growing them in pots and boxes, it's time to put these plants in the ground. I am working with a landscape architect for the design but wanted to solicit advice from the group at large. I have to work in roughly 170 trees/plants. Some will probably have to be axed. East is towards the top of the plan. I don't like where the cherimoyas are positioned and want to move them between the curved firepit and the sports court. Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom and advice :-)

Avocado - 21
Citrus - 34
Stone Fruit - 15
Apples/Pears - 3
Mango - 22
Mulberry - 3
Blueberry - 5
Cherimoya Ė 4
Persimmon Ė 5
Sapote Ė 5
Guava Ė 2
Fig Ė 8
Miracle Fruit Ė 2
Cinnamon Ė 1
Elder Berry Ė 1
Olive Ė 3
Dragon Fruit Ė 3-5
Grapes Ė 7
Pomegranate - 5

Would like some trellises for grapes and other vine plants (ie, passionfruit)
Would like a simple structure for the dragon fruit

Cinnamon and miracle fruit need shade with indirect light

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Brokaw mango varieties - any thoughts
« on: June 28, 2017, 06:29:57 PM »
I was at Laguna Hills Nursery recently and saw some new mango varieties that I had never heard of before. Gary told me they are from Brokaw nursery but I can't find any reviews or end-consumer information about the cultivars (taste, parentage, growth habit, rootstock, etc). They showed me a rating scale that the grower sent 😀.

There are a few varieties but I got Manila queen, edgehill, and placid which seemed to be the most highflying recommended of the bunch . I think there are least 2 others: 2022 and winters.

Anyone hear anything or have any experience with these types?
