Tropical Fruit Discussion / Spacing of rollinia trees
« on: January 29, 2014, 03:22:14 PM »
I followed the suggestion of allowing 15 ' between trees. My oldest trees are 3 years old & already to beginning to touch. At this rate it seems that there will be heavy over lap which will make getting around them difficult unless I cut back. I have topped the trees  to keep 10 ' or less in height. Has any one else had to cut back lateral branches to separate the trees? If so did this seem to have adverse effects on the growth or condition of trees health or production? I would rather not cut back but need to have access . Any thoughts?

Does any one use one of these? Would like to know what features to look for & how long can it be & still be manageable. I need to control a wind break/ hedge  to about 14 feet. Any great saws at a good price? Any should be avoided ?

thank for your help

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tropical fruit growers utility belt
« on: December 25, 2013, 08:26:48 PM »
Would like ideas , suggestions, or examples of ways to have the tools that we frequently use in a devise [ belt?] that is carried on ones self. Store bought holders [ like for pruning shears] can be almost as expensive as the device its self. Also having everything in one place means not having to go back for what was forgotten!!
experiences & ideas appreciated .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / need rollinia help
« on: November 08, 2013, 09:54:09 PM »
Many of our 3 year old trees have flowers on them, on some trees  more than 100. BUT only 1 fruit!!  Is it possible that the trees are too young?

We have a climate similar to Oscars [ we are @ 165 ' on east Maui - the wet side] & he has commented that he thought the high humidity was the key to getting fruit.

Can we be lacking a pollinating bug?  Had no trouble in getting natural fruit set on sugar apple & some success with cherimoya.

Looking at the flowers they seem more complicated than  other anonas. Guess I shall have to hand pollinate. Is there a best time of day? & will I have to collect & store pollen?

Any help on how to do or what to do is greatly appreciated .

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / rollinia recovering
« on: September 13, 2013, 08:08:43 PM »
We had a tropical storm several weeks ago & several rollinias got knocked over. In an attempt to get the trees up rite & save them some drastic pruning was done [ I know this is NOT the way to cut back a tree]. Now several weeks later almost every tertiary branch has little " helicopters". Unfortunately with most the leaf canopy remove I doubt that any fruit will set; this may be just an attempt @ survival?

Wondering if any one has any experience or seen pitaya virus? Wondered  what it looks like in regards to color break or deformities? Is the plant growth effected & is there any reduction in fruit production?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / HEIGHT OF ROLLINIAS
« on: April 08, 2013, 04:20:54 PM »
Saw a u-tube of folks picking rollinias but had to use a latter, pole & means to catch fruit. Have several 2 year old trees that are really taking off .So I was wondering if it would be ok to top the trees so as to limit the harvest height? Hopefully that would produce a more squat tree? or would the the production be lower once trees had matured?

thanks
