Tropical Fruit Discussion / Acerola varieties
« on: August 25, 2023, 09:44:27 PM »
Hi,
I have been recommended by a good friend to look into acerola.

Are there superior varieties of Acerola?  I would like to try growing a couple of good varieties.
What is the best time to obtain cuttings?

Thanks

You should always dip the cut scionnin water before grafting.  Even sticking in your mouth andnusing spit works fine.

Hi.   I didn't know beforehand, but apparently it does make a world of difference!

Hi,
I purchased some scions, but I was away when they arrived  :-[....  In total, I think it was a about two weeks (maybe a bit more) from the time they were cut to the moment I worked with them.  I thought to myself, "none of these grafts will take...".

The first atemoya variety scions, I just went ahead and grafted them as they were.  But then, as I was finishing with that variety, I thought to myself, "these have been out for a long time.... maybe hydrating them in water would help...".  So, I did that for the second variety.  I left those over 10 minutes on plain tap water.

The grafts for those that I didn't hydrate, the first variety, none of them took!  Out of 4 grafts of the second variety, the one that I did hydrate, 3 grafts have taken....

Don't know if this is significant or just casual... but I am hydrating ANY SCION that comes into my hands  :) :)

Hope this helps someone.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Moving to Panama
« on: May 02, 2023, 02:19:55 PM »
Peter, I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to ask you about some Panama citrus fruits.

I heard there is a national lemon of Panama, it sounds like it is slightly different from our normal lemons here in the US. If you know the variety name of this lemon or have any photos to share, please do so. I have a few seeds a friend is growing of this lemon but I couldn't find any information on the internet browsing looking for a photo of the fruit.

Thanks.

Hi,
What is called "national lemon" is really quite different from american lemons.  In fact, I am not sure it is really a lemon.  It is green and looks basically identical to a small persian lime.  In terms of its flavor, it also tastes quite similar to a persian lime.

In supermarkets you can typically find both "lemons": the "national lemon", and the persian lime, which is referred to as "grafted lemon".   Yellow lemons are also typically sold in markets, but I think that for the most part they are imported...  I'd guess mostly "Eureka" lemons....  Very difficult to find "Meyer's" lemons.

HTH...

Hi Seanny,
I am unfamiliar with the "inlay side graft".  Do you have a reference I can look up on the internet?

Thanks for your detailed comments,
Edgard

Scion pushes when it absorb water, or sap.
Sometimes cleft and bark graft have an issue of sap flow, flooding the graft union.
This causes the scion to push prematurely.
It’s worst in hot weather or rain or watering the rootstock.

I graft atemoya in July here.
I don’t use cleft.
I use inlay side graft.
I don’t cut the rootstock off above the graft until a month later.
This gives the graft enough time to callus.
This avoids sap flow issue.

It’s weird that you are having issue with only PPC.
Maybe switch to inlay side graft for this variety.

I experienced similar situation with PPC grafts. They would sprout fast then died back. I recently grafted PPC again to 4 different trees and only 1 graft has taken. Keep in mind I have successfully grafted Dream, Dr White, AP2, LM3, Red Geffner, etc.

Thanks for your comments.   And this is using what kind of rootstocks?

Which grafting method did you use?

I have used both a cleft graft and a side cleft graft.  In both cases I got the same result.

I am wondering if there is some sort of incompatibility, maybe partial incompatibility....

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Problem grafting PPC atemoyas
« on: April 26, 2023, 11:12:24 AM »
Hi,
I recently tried to graft PPC atemoyas for the second time without success.  Last year I also tried, and the same thing happened.  Let me explain what happened and maybe someone has some idea on what to do.

I grafted the PPC scions onto sugar apple rootstocks.  Within about a week the scions started to sprout, so it seemed like the graft was working great.   At this point it even looks better than the other grafts I have tried  :(....  Then, after about 2-3 more weeks, the new growth dies, and so does the graft.  The same thing happened last year.  I think in total I have done 4-5 grafts... In all cases the graft appears to take very rapidly, but then dies off....

What could be the problem?  Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Next week in Orlando Florida
« on: April 08, 2023, 01:14:09 PM »
Hi!  My son is attending college in Orlando, Florida, and we are going to visit him next Monday, and stay for a couple of weeks.
I am thinking that maybe this would be a good opportunity to visit a mango farm that sells their goods...  Do you guys know if there are any places more or less close to Orlando where I can sample some nice mangoes?
Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona scions disinfection with bleach
« on: March 16, 2023, 02:04:31 PM »
Hi,
Last year I had annona scions grow mold and not take.   Don't know if they didn't take because I messed up in the grafting or the mold, but I am SURE the mold didn't help :-).... This year, I would like to disinfect the scions to see if I get better grafting success.

I have been reading in various places and, probably, the most common recommendation is to use bleach.  The most typical concentration is 1:10 Clorox bleach: water solution.

There have been however significant variations about how long to dip the scions in the bleach solution.  One person in "Houzz forums" said to not place in the solution for more that 1 minute.  Another person said in another forum to use 2-3 minutes, and yet another one said 5 minutes.

Another thing that left me wondering was that someone recommended to "seal" the ends of the scion to prevent bleach from damaging the cambium layer.

Do you guys have some experience on this?

Thanks!

Hi,
Do you know if these can be grafted onto Sugar Apple?
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting jabouticaba cuttings
« on: February 03, 2023, 02:15:25 PM »
Hi,
A while back I commented that a friend of mine has a jabouticaba tree (over 20 years old).   Best guess right now is that it is Plinia coronata.

Six months ago, I cut some branches of the tree and planted them in ground.  It took a while to lose the leaves, but eventually they did lose them....  After 6 months however, it has not produced ANY root, but INCREDIBLY, the cutting is still green if you scratch it.

Anyone know how to root these things?

Thanks,
Edgard

Sugar apple does not live a long time in my experience. <20 years. Cherimoya is suposed to live longer.

Thanks for your comments.   I didn't know this!

Yes you can. It will grow faster and live longer on Cherimoya, though.

What do you mean by "live longer"?

Sugar Apple - I get about 5 decent sized fruits from a 5 gal container. Plants are about 5yrs old. That said I am planning on up-potting to a 7 gal. 5 fruits to sample for a year is good enough for me. I have to haul these into the garage for 5 months out of the year.

Hi,
Thanks for your comment.  Yes, even 5 fruits per plant would be fine by me.

Could you show me pictures of the trees?   I would like to understand better how to prune/train them to keep them small enough yet productive.

Thanks Nick and Brian,
And about how much space should I leave between pots?

Hi,

What is a reasonable pot size for atemoyas and sugar apples?  And about how much space should I leave between plants (as a minimum)?  I don't have much space available so I need to optimize it as much as I can....

I was thinking on going 15 gallons final size, and put the plants apart every 2 feet (i.e., each plant in its' 2x2 cell).

Can you guys offer some help on this?

Thanks!

Hi Mike!
I have been considering planting one or two Mulberry varieties, but I was wondering about three things:   (1) I would like to have the sweetest Mulberries possible, (2) I don't have much space, so I need to grow these in a 10 gallon pot, and (3) I am in a hot and humid climate.

Are there Mulberry varieties which would fit my three constraints?

BTW, there are a few mulberries here, so I know at least some varieties do grow and fruit.  The ones I have tasted here however are a bit too acidic, I would prefer them sweeter.

Do you have any recommendations?  Thanks!

Fruit loading for Fino de Jete cherimoya is around 0.22 kg per cm square of trunk area.
Other research concluded less than 0.22kg.
After conversion it comes to roughly diameter squared kg.
For example, a trunk of 2” should hold 2x2= 4kg of fruits.
That’s 4 big fruits.

Thanks for this!  Very interesting.

Eat a perfectly ripe fruit punch mango for me. As you're eating it, let a couple drops from the juices drip to the ground for the homies that can't be there.

 :) :) :) :) :)

Polyembryonic:  Multiple embryos one of which is a mix of the mother and the pollen donor and the others clones of the mother.

Thanks for your explanation.  So even with the polyembryonic seed types, one of the embryos is not true to type.   This is very interesting.  Thanks again for commenting.

Hi,
Are some mango varieties true to type?  It seems to me that I have seen posts saying that some varieties are....  Is there a way of knowing if a variety is true to type or not?

Thanks,
Edgard
