Myrica rubra is an obligate N fixer and uses a species Frankia bacteria to create its own N inside on nodules in their roots, I’m not sure that it is wise to remove all root nodules because it would prevent the plants from producing their own nitrogen. The lose of their symbiotic bacteria might slow down the trees growth. I’m sure mixing in a microrhyzel  mix might help the plants but removing all the nitrogen nodules might be hard on the plant. Here is an article about their nodule formation but there are a few articles about it

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pouteria hypoglauca flowers falling
« on: July 21, 2017, 12:25:24 AM »
I have several Pouteria hypoglauca plants that seem to bloom every year but then all of them fall off. Anyone have any suggestions? This seems to be the hardest Pouteria species out there.

Hello this is Steven Murray, I am back in America and on May 9 I will be hosting the Kern Chapter meeting at my family's farm in Bakersfield, Ca. I will give a presentation about some of the fruits I encountered in my last 9 months abroad in Asia as an exchange student in China and while fruit exploring across Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Dubai, India, Turkey, and Germany. Afterwards I will give a fruit tasting of Murray Family Farms, hayride, and a tour of my personal rare fruit collection of 350 species of 1,500 varieties. Please come to the event if you are available.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Giant bael fruit?
« on: March 06, 2015, 12:56:36 AM »
There have been different varieties of bael fruit and wood apple everywhere I've visited. I have one bael fruit tree in California that I planted the seeds of in 2004 and hopefully it will fruit soon, but i dont know of how high its quality will be. I tried some at University of California riverside citrus germplasm and they were all terrible. Ive tried many different kinds here and there are some very nice ones. The shell thickness varies but the better varieties taste a lot like orange marmalade. They also make a decent drink. So far I was less impressed with the wood apple even though ive heard better reviews but the fruit are similar in taste with wood apple also having a sour and sweet flavor instead of the bael which is just sweet. In the USA to my knowledge there are no good bael fruits available. I will post more photos of different kinds later.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dovyalis hybrid (tropical apricot)
« on: March 05, 2015, 04:07:37 PM »
This was one of the first rare fruits I got back in 2004 when I started collecting. Fruit of tropical apricot are nice but can be too sour if not just ripe. I have lots of relatives of it now too and can't wait until the ketembella starts to produce. I'm growing kei apple from 5 sources and hope to see differences between them once they are all producing. I'm also growing lovi and governors plum now. I'm got to try the sweet lovi here and still think tropical apricot and a good kei are still the top of the bunch in my book. I was in Tanzania last summer and tried the Sabia species there. I too would really like to find Ancylobotrys capensis, those fruits look so beautiful.

Are these the same species? I found then in some markets in Vientiene Laos, and then others in later on(no photos of those sorry) in Chiang Mai Thailand. I plan to bring the seeds back with small lots of seeds permit. Any germination advice?

I've seen bael fruit in several parts of the world and these are by far the biggest I've ever seen. Anyone seen bigger or have I just not been to the right places. These were found in a market in Myanmar.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID a Sri Lankan plant with fruits?
« on: March 05, 2015, 03:41:15 PM »
Hello, long time no see. I was in the mountains of Sri Lanka and I came across this vine with huge fruit masses on it. I heard from a friend in India that it might be poisonous but I'm not really sure what these are. Anyone able to give an ID?

I had three trees from different sources when I left USA last summer. Not sure how long it will take to bear fruits. If they are still alive when I get back and it fruit I'll hook you up Ed

I've been to that market years ago, one the best ones for exotic fruits I've been to in Europe outside of the one in Los rubles in Barcelona. I remember I bought really good jackfruit and some Salak, but the Salak were rotten.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruits of Tanzania

About a month ago I spent some time in Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar in Tanzania Africa. The fruit selection was was fairly poor on the mainland with mainly oranges and baobobs fruit availae but there was some cool stuff on Zanzibar. Here are some photos. I did come in contact with lots of sabia species and they had their own kinds of rambutans that they called litchis and their own kinds of durian

I'm actually back in China, they actually had very high quality Cherimoyas in Taiwan. I also found jabuticabas, marang, noni, Salak, and lots of types of Crartegus. Plus them Buddhas pears. I have since come back to china and will be here for the next 6 months, later I will write a post about my trip a month ago to the island of Zanzibar

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What on earth is a baobab?

I recently traveled to Tanzania and these trees were everywhere. In Africa they use these to make candies and a drink. The flavor is very mild and taste kind of like yogurt to me. After boiling it taste like outmeal. The candies are sweet and sour.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help IDing myrtaceae plant
« on: March 11, 2014, 05:05:56 AM »
Hello, I've posted photos of this species a few times and I am still not sure what this plant is? The plant is about 8 years old and grows extremely slow. I've heard people mention Latin American Eugenia, jabo relative and others but have never gotten a positive ID on it. The plant is odiferous and smells nice. Not sure how to explain it. Thanks for all the help!

In two weeks I will be headed to Taipei and Beijing in mainland China. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to go to find rare fruits or rare wild fruits in Taipei area? I'm interested in good fruit markets or botanical gardens or anywhere where there is a lot of different rare fruits. Thank you all and I will post photos of fruits once I arrive.
我特别喜欢看一看台湾的本地水果,热带水果,于野生果。大家推荐我去什么地方?  谢谢
