Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are these seedlings Bael Fruit?
« on: March 21, 2023, 02:50:06 PM »
I've looked at leaves online but don't feel confident I've made a match. Seeds were from Fruit & Spice Park, but I planted so many different things and lost labels in the storm. Is anyone growing Bael Fruit? Thanks!

JCorte, is that a Brown Anole in the first photo of your most recent post? Are they in California? Beautiful photos!

Too funny about the Black Pepper, roblack! In the bug photo, an Assassin Bug is eating a fly that was pollinating my Pickering 😳 Fortunately, enough flies survived to achieve excellent fruit set😄. Thanks for the macro recommendation!

Speaking of Anoles, saw this Green beauty at Naples Botanical Garden this past Friday.

Awesome photos! I need to get a macro lens, and I need to actually start using my digital camera. The cellphone is just too convenient though, when out working in the yard:

roblack, when I sent my friend pics of my first Passionflowers, he asked if they were real. After confirming they were, he dubbed them the Drag Queens of Flowers. I thought it a fitting epithet.

This is on some Sugarloaf fruitlets. Not all, thank goodness gracious. What is it and should anything be done? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugarloaf seedling thread

I have three Sugarloaf seedlings in the ground.

Two are from a 2021 fruit from my tree. This one's leaves have an Indian-Alphonso scent, so I tried unsuccessfully to graft a Kathy scion onto it. I trimmed under the failed graft and will try again this upcoming summer.

This next one is from the same seed, but the leaves smell pineappley to me:

This last one is a 2022 seedling that came from a fruit we got from shot--easily one of the best mangos we've ever had. Two sprouts came from one seed. One sprout's leaves had an Indian-Alphonso smell to them, so it didn't get planted. This one's leaves have an Indochinese smell to them, so it's in ground now.

Too funny about 25 to Life, Jabba the Hutt! I wonder how a lawyer would handle the case if one was facing that? Would the people/business that sold the Coconut Cream Mango to the seed planter bear any responsibility--seeing that the patent information was not disclosed at the time of sale?

C-20 patent expires March 20, 2031

On a side note, based on what pagnr points out regarding gene expression, I wonder if Lemon Zest and Orange Sherbet are clones of Po Pyu Kalay?

To perhaps add to the confusion, I believe I read somewhere within the TFF that there can be differences within "clonal" seedlings--if I remember correctly (and it's a big if), they'll have the same genes, but they can be expressed differently? My brain doesn't understand scientific things, so apologies if I misread or misremembered this. Regardless, drymifolia addresses this by noting applicable propagation methods (rooting, grafting, tissue culture).

Galatian522, my planting Coconut Cream seeds was not meant as an affront to the hard work of the Zills.  I originally didn't know it was patented (didn't even know there was such a mango until 2017 or 2018). The 2018 seedling I have flowering has leaves that smell like what Alex calls Indian - Alphonso. I do not like this type of mango. If it holds fruit, I may need to enlist someone who like Alphonso-type mangos to rate its quality.

All my Sugarloaf fruitlets seem to have black spots on them -- guessing that's not good

I'm confused -- I thought you could plant seeds of Coconut Cream? Because it's polyembryonic, you're not necessarily creating a clone in the way grafting a scion would? Help clarify for a Coconut Cream seed planter!

I think actual Candy Corn is disgusting, and I will unfortunately be influenced by that if I ever get to taste a Mango with that name. I don't like the name (nor the suggested "Candy Sweet" I believe I read was suggested for M-4), and Watermelon Splash sounds like a sweet mixed drink that I wouldn't like. Watermelon is one of my all-time favorite fruits, but not sure it's a taste I'd appreciate in a Mango. Am I the only one who is influenced by names? Do people like Candy Corn?

Probably in the minority here, but I like names like "M-4" and "E-4".

We're hoping too, shot . . . Through your farm, we've been able to try for the first time: Black Sapote, Ross Sapote, Canistel, Ice Cream Bean, Rollinia, and probably a couple other things I can't think of now, as well as top tier Mangos and Jackfruit and Sapodilla and Longan and Lychee picked at the perfect time. It's been our go-to for the best fruit fix. Looking forward to future visits.

Awesome updates! Our other two Pickerings and NDM#4 are pushing, but because of freeze and hurricane damage, I'm debating whether or not to let them hold fruit. In a recent Truly Tropical video, Har said flowering can occur anytime between November and May, so I'm still hoping our oldest seedling trees flower this year . . .

Yes, even with the ones that've turned yellow and dropped, there's still an absurd amount growing. Also growing is the Coconut Cream seedling's panicles. Only one branch has panicles, though.

This seedling Zill's Dark fruited for the first time a couple months ago and is now loaded with flowers. Fruit were dark and in line with the parent, but what excites me most is that this seedling stands at only 3 1/2' tall.

I think it's a Hermit Flower Beetle

In spite of subsequent cold (but not as cold) nights and really windy days, my two seedling Soursops are rebounding. Hopefully other people's are, as well.

Thanks, achetadomestica and ScottR! Yes, it's small--around 3' and just a trunk with leaves on it.

Dang, that's huge! What was the flavor profile? Did it have fiber? Did it ripen evenly? No clue as to what it could be, but it's impressive looking--it looks like it has muscles!
