As far as timing,  most varieties I have seen are at least 2 -4 weeks away.

John - your comparison to Pickering timing wise, Pickering is not an early season mango.

Fairchild made Angie sound like an early season mango when they were promoting it.

One observation. As recent as yesterday I have come to the personal conclusion that Oro Negro has been recommended too early without sufficient testing. I would not recommend it for home or definitely not for  commercial.
I would "marry" a Monroe with a Catalina, they complement and pollinate each other well. You have two wonderful avocados covering the second 1/2 of the year.  If you have extra space would add an Utuado to cover the period between Catalina and Monroe.
I have many new earlier varieties that will be evaluated in the next 36 month. I'm exited about the Blas, Berta Rodriguez and some of the Hawaiians.

I may be replaceing my Oro Negro with Monroe!

My Angie tree (2 years old) has about a dozen or so fruit.  I had thought it would be earlier than Pickering, but that doesn't appear to be the case.  The fruit looks like it has another month to go on the tree, but boy am I dying to taste it!  We'll see if it lives up to the Fairchild hype.

Thanks Guys! Appreciated the help. Yes I am familiar with both Carlo's webpage and the pine island avocado viewer. I am planning to keep the avo trees small (below 10 foot high) so that production is small but spread across the entire year (if that is possible). Brogdon and Oro negro (or monroe) were already on my  list. Between oro negro and monroe (both late variety) which one is the creamiest?

In his webpage Carlos appear to love the Nishikawa. Would you guys know where to get one? Pine island does not offer it...maybe Excalibur? Thanks again

Carlos believes that Monroe is many times more productive than Oro Negro, but Oro Negro may be creamier and more flavorful although Monroe is still considered an excellent avocado by Florida standards.  I don't know if you can keep an avocado tree at 10 feet and still get enough of a crop to be worthwhile.  I would say avocado trees aren't happy unless they can attain some height.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: New Persimmon - "South Florida"

Bught a healthy nice looking triumph from Pepe but it didn't last 2 years here in miami beach. Now have a south florida that appears to be frozen in time since I bought it 1 year ago...limbs are flexible and tree is alive. Similar behavior as the triumph.... I wonder whether the issue could be proximity to ocean /high saline environment. Anybody growing it successfully close to the beach?

I'm less than one mile from the beach, and my Triumph is doing fine, appears to be setting fruit after 2 years in the ground.  I purchased a "South Florida" recently, which I haven't planted yet.

In addition to the Pine Island Nursery guide (www.tropicalfruittrees.com), please consult Carlos's website (www.myavocadotrees.com) or Carlos personally (CTMIAMI on this forum).  He's evaluating more avocado varieties for South Florida than anyone I know of.

How long do you think you'll have these available?  I'd like to start my pineapple patch next month, but I'm going on vacation for a week first.

When I was 10 or 11, I planted a dwarf Navel orange.  This was in South Gate, CA, about 10 miles south of downtown L.A.  It never bore any fruit.  Next was a Meyer lemon, which had tons of fruit, followed by a dwarf Redhaven peach, which produced not more than a half-dozen fruit and then went into decline.  After that, it was a Babcock peach and a Hass avocado, which produced lots of delicious fruit.  The vegetable garden also was a huge success--carrots, lettuce, broccoli, green beans, tomatoes, okra, even corn!

3910
I've never had any problems with my SK.  It bears heavily with some enormous fruit, and the fruit is the best flavored carambola that I've ever tasted--better than Kari, which I had at a previous house.  I'm 100% sold on SK!  My neighbor in back has a carambola tree in his front yard so I do get cross-pollination.

From what Julian told me, the Miami is not fibreless or ultra sweet, just a good tasting highly productive soursop tree. From my experience, those supposed ultra sweet or fibre-free soursops are lousy producers and what is the use of growing something like that? The famous Whitman fibre-less soursop was also fruit-less!

Good point.

Awesome Tour ! . I love Homestead !..

You guys are Lucky to live near that area...
Great to See Mr & Mrs H !...

Ed..

P.s. the Lara Guanabana fruit is of good size , I wonder from what Country was the Doner tree & if the Fruit is sweet Fiber Count..

Yes, I would like to know more about Lara's guanabanas!!!

Looks like you'll have to focus on cold-hardy varieties.  Definitely make an investment in grafted trees and proven varieties.  On an average lot you should be able to grow 2 to 3 avocado trees unless your house is already surrounded with shade trees.

Lychees look like a waste of yard space. Better to keep the grass or plant something else. Reason being they skip too many years for fruiting. My neighbor has an established hak ip lychee 20 ft tall and wide. No fruit this year and last year. I do have a 3yr old Mauritius planted and am resigned to waiting (for fruit)

Yeah, I've been thinking as much myself, especially being close to the beach like I am.  I took out a Hak Ip tree but still have a Mauritius.  I'll probably wait a few years, like you

Jason of Pepes plants has carried the triumph in the past.  His username is ggpalms.

Yes, I bought my Triumph from him about 2 years ago.  It's healthy and growing well, but no fruit so far.

John did you open them? I got some a couple of years ago and were black inside. Please let me know how yours turn out

So far, so good.  We had the first one at dinner today, and it was fine.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hass Avocados from Dominican Republic?
« on: April 26, 2014, 04:47:57 PM »
I was very suprised to find Hass avocados from the Dominican Republic at a local grocery store.  I've seen them from Mexico and Chile.  These were the first from DR.  An interesting thing about them is that the skin doesn't turn black when the fruit is ripe,  It turns brown.  Any comments from our friends in DR or PR?

The deed is done.  I took off 15 little fruit.  The Sri Lankan weevils and other little critters are making Swiss cheese out of a lot of the new leaves!

I should ripen by summer or the tree can drop them. Simmonds sets a lot of fruit but drops a lot.
if you want to give your tree a good start, cut them off now and you will be handsomely regarded next season.

I'm going to follow your advice, Carlos, but I sure was tickled to see fruit on that tree already!
