Does anyone still have Mangos on your trees In Florida? Please name cultivars and please state what stage your Remaining crop is in. Thank you

I am a big fan of a backyard-grown south Florida “keitt”
I have a 6 foot tree in my yard collection, despite all the warnings about disease issues. I enjoy the sweet, juicy, coconut flavor, large size and it’s potential for consistency very late season. My question is aimed at all the mango pros/experts and veteran growers on here ( I enjoy all of your info and advice).

Is “Keitt” even worth planting any more in south Florida? Is the impending MBBS doom probability so great of a threat to the tree and my other trees?  that a tree in the yard is not worth the space?

I figured I better ask everyone now before rainy season dooms my young, Precious 7-tree Miami grove.

THANK YOU

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango ID...
« on: May 19, 2020, 06:11:38 PM »
I pulled up my truck and stood on my bed with my picker on a public median for these...my guess is Angie. Anyone have an idea? Flesh is bright/pale yellow. Tree is large but not huge and fruit is good size.  Flavor was sweet, completely fiberless almost gelatinous with notes of peach in center and honey towards skin.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / “Karen Michelle” Mango
« on: May 15, 2020, 10:24:55 AM »
Wow, picked up a “Karen Michelle” Mango and just bit into it. It’s a fiberless, large, excellent mango. At first taste it’s like a del monte fruit cocktail, then close to the center it’s a creamy pina colada mix with the cherry smushed up and mixed around. Delicious.

Does anybody know the story on this one from ZHPP? Parentage? Was it part of the Zill performance mango program?

Hey y’all mango fanatics, I cruised up to Alex’s place in Palm Beach and bought everything he had in the “picked” crate. I always wanted to meet Alex and he Was super cool and knowledgeable as I expected. Alex’s Grove is the chocolate factory and Alex is Willy Wonka(in a very good way)I was excited to try some super early mangoes because who doesn’t like the notion of potentially having mangoes in April ripening in their yard? I’m a novice but  Most cultivars differ slightly chronologically from year-to year but early or mid or late holds true.

So I figured I’d share my taste opinion on each because they are not widely discussed varieties on the forum. I cannot speak to the productivity, disease resistance or anything valuable to a grower, but guys like Har and Alex and pros like them will handle that. This post is about Early Mango TASTE. (IMO)

Here’s what Alex sold me in order of my preference:

“Edward”:
Excellent “Miami mango,” sweet, dense, fiberless and very creamy(seems best when barely soft to touch). Bright Orange and very Juicy. Julian Lara of Lara farms told me it’s in his top 5 and always will be. Medium sized.

“Duncan” :
Not a favorite of me or the wife. When eaten a bit early, it is very bitter towards skin and tangy/zesty towards the seed. When left to soften a bit more, it tasted like a mild Peach towards the seed, pleasant but not delicious, and also very resinous/bitter toward the skin. Fiberless, light, soft flesh. Me and my wife did not enjoy it very much, just a mild, peachy mango with bitter skin. I’d call it “decent”.Medium sized.

“Rosigold” :

When cut, there is a floral aroma, when eaten it tasted how it smelled. Floral, must have been named for the flavor as-well as the skin appearance. The wife and I would not add it to our collection. It was so floral and piney that we cannot see adding it to the yard UNLESS you MUST have an April Mango, but even then it is a complex mango, floral and bitter at the skin. Fiberless and soft. Small.

“Philippine” :
When eaten early it is like a spoon half full of honey and half full
Of fresh lime juice. Very soft flesh at any ripe stage. Fiberless. Small. When eaten later and softer its just a good honey mango. Simple honey flavor, not overpoweringly sweet. We like it, but not a “wow” mango by any means. Very good sliced with yogurt or over sticky coconut rice. Small
Fruit but very high yield of flesh for its size as the seed is flat.

PLEASE SHARE ALL VERY EARLY
MANGO TASTINGS (BEFORE MAY 1st)

THANK YOU ALL AND PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS JUST MY OPINION I AM A NOVICE BACKYARD GROWER WITH A MANGO OBSESSION.

Hi friends, Here in Biscayne Park, Florida my Cedar Bay Cherry has 8 flowers on it at a miniature night of 30 inches tall. My friend, forum member and tropical fruit mentor Adam Coff Gave it to me exactly one year ago and I planted it in my Yard that day. After being in Ground for just one year and being such a small size I was shocked. Everything I’ve read would infer they take 6 or 7 years from seed to flower.
If it helps anybody growing or trying to grow:

Planted the small shrub in a spot with 8 hours of direct sun all year.
Planted in 50/50 mix of native(very sandy) soil and black cow.’
Mulch with cypress mulch.

*the shrub does have a bit of a rust problem (or it would seem to me unless it’s a natural characteristic)

Worth noting:here in Miami we have had 6 weeks of drought, probably a cause for flowering if not THEE cause.

Now we will see about fruit-set.

ANYONE ELSE ON THE FORUM GROWING CEDAR BAY CHERRY( Eugenia reinwardtiana)??? Successes and failures under noted conditions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / MANGO TREE ETHICS
« on: January 08, 2020, 08:48:24 PM »
Good evening my fellow mango lovers, i am a lover of mangoes and most tropical fruits. I sold my Miami Condo and took my potted plants with me to my new home about 1 mango season ago. I have carefully selected the mango varieties In my yard based on all of you mango pros here and some obsessive research. Unfortunate they are all too young to produce any decent crop of mangoes. However, my neighbors tree is LOADED with flowers. It was nearly killed last year from his “roundup” usage but has bounced back better than ever this year it seems. The trunk of the tree is almost touching my 6 foot fence and about 40 percent of it overhangs my yard. It’s about 15 ft high and of very nice upright dense growth but I’ve yet to see a fruit so it’s unidentifiable to me.

MY QUESTIONS: How far is too far?
Can I pick the mangoes directly above my fence? If a mango hangs half on my side and half on his, can I take the flesh and give him the pit? If his squirrel bites one of mine hanging can I take a bite from one of his? If one falls on my fence and lands in his yard is that still technically mine? If the wind is swinging the Fruits from yard to yard can I pick them when they swing to my side? If he is picking them off his tree and reaches over my fence to get one am I allowed to get mad? Can I tell people they are my mangoes when they sample them and rave about the taste? HOW FAR IS TOO FAR??

I have two citrus trees in 15 gallon pots, 1 Navel Orange and One Bearss Lemon. They both fruited last year, the Navel put out 19 oranges, I ate them in July. The Lime put out about 20 limes throughout the year. WILL TRADE FOR ONE 15 gallon Mango- LET ME KNOW WHAT YA GOT IF I HAVE ANY TAKERS?
Why? Because citrus just don’t turn me on, but mangoes...ooo la la. Different strokes for different folks.(Prefer Maha Chanok but let me know what ya got)

Navel Orange-

(Pick when they give if you squeeze them, they will still be green but orange and ripe inside)
Bearss Lemon-

(Pick when they JUST start to yellow)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ruby Supreme Guava Success in Miami, Fl
« on: August 11, 2019, 01:15:07 AM »
I had to share my intense satisfaction with my grafted “Ruby Supreme” Guava. I bought the small
Tree in a 3 gallon pot in April of 2018 from a local nursery. I immediately transplanted it to a 15 gallon pot on my midtown-Miami condo balcony and nurtured it. I then bought my first house and sold the condo and planted the Guava in my yard in a small
Neighborhood close to North Miami. It began to fruit in August of 2018 and continued to grow, blossom and fruit for a year straight and counting. The small tree has produced 17 of the most delicious guavas and has grown exponentially fast. I’m STOKED. I prune the low branches that seem to gather the only powdery mildew and white mold (I suppose because they are closest to the damp ground) and I keep good air circulation. I have used no pesticides or fungicides, only pruning and I’ve fertilized with 10-10-10 a couple times and osmocote plus once. I THANK YOU ALL HERE FOR THE WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE THAT I READ NIGHTLY. No fruit flies YET...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ruby red guava super producer
« on: May 12, 2019, 07:46:14 PM »
Had to share my excitement, Got my grafted “ruby red” Guava last year in April. This is the change in 13 months. It’s gone From a 24 inch stick on my balcony to a beast in the ground with 18 fruits(I guess they are really berries but prove it). I transferred from a pot to the ground 2 months ago and it’s exploded with guavas. I’ve had three unbelievably delicious guavas so far. Maybe the stress of the transfer has been the key to success but I’m riding the wave.
Before (13 months) and after(now):

Hi y’all! I’m new to the forum and I’m
Hooked
On this stuff. Can you please help me ID this delicious guava? I bought it and was told it was a grafted ruby supreme. However, the photos I’ve seen of a ruby don’t look similar. We ate our first one tonight was the best guava we ever had. Very sweet and aromatic with tiny seeds. Leaves are longer and pointier than most guava leaves I’ve seen.
